William Grant, [born in 1908], was born near Pittsview, Alabama...He was given a harmonica one Christmas, and he says he learned how to play it while sitting on a plow in the fields. 'I played at parties in the countries,' he said. 'I used to pick guitar, but I come to religion and I put the guitar down. I promised the Lord I wouldn't fool with a guitar no more, but I didn't promise Him I wouldn't fool with a harp. I always keep a harp' - George Mitchell, from In Celebration of a Legacy: The Traditional Arts of the Lower Chattahoochee Valley http://southernspaces.org/2004/blues-lower-chattahoochee-valley

What a great track. I'd only really heard Walter Roland's boogie woogie piano stuff.

Perhaps a stretch for Country Blues related but...

Lewisohn Stadium on the Harlem Campus of City College was a famous venue for, concerts often groundbreaking like this one, and often geared towards a left wing audience. The Concerts were either free or very inexpensive.

Boy, that one is a winner, Prof.!  What a great signature lick!  I don't know this guy at all.  Do you know where he's from?  Sounds like it might be New Orleans.
All best,
Johnm

Apparently he was a street singer in LA, John. Don't know where he hailed from originally. One for Bunker Hill, I think!

You're finding some real winners, Prof!  That Luther Stoneham track is really nice, never heard of him before, and Willie Lane was great, too.  Thanks for these.
All best,

That should be Victory Rag. It's also done as an autoharp showpiece, initially by Maybelle Carter, then popularised by Mike Seeger with the NLCR.
