Nice guitar .... but 'fraid Hi ham not a 'uge a-fan hof-a that hoverly haspirated an' haffected singing style.I can't stand the way this guy sings. Wow! That Hobart Smith piano piece is a real ear /mind opener! Its the kind of thing you might hear in a dream. Amazingly, I find it far more interesting than the fiddle or banjo versions, perhaps because of how unexpected it is. Thanks John.
I'm glad you enjoyed that "Fly Around My Blue-Eyed Gal", Phil. There was something about Hobart Smith's time that was just sort of super-charged, electric--wow! Thanks also to Lightnin' and Pete for finding the other cuts of Hobart Smith playing piano, neither of which I had previously heard.
All best, John JRO
Hello,
I popped to Cecil Vaughn's version of when I was looking after differend versions of Bill Monroes version of the song. Vaughn's version is recorded 1929. Does somebody know anything about Cecil Vaughn or the origins of the song? Edit. I did some research work more and it seems that Carter Family did first recorded version of the song as The wandering boy in Bristol august 1927 and that it could be R.S.Hanna Song "Somebody's Boy Is Homeless Tonight" from 1884. Song starts at 2,48. lindy
I see that Bert Logan's name has been mentioned a couple of times on this forum, but I don't think anyone's posted a recording of his playing. He was an uncle of Big Joe Williams. Lindy lindy
I'm assuming that this Roosevelt Charles is the same as the one who appears on the Angola Prison collection that Harry Oster recorded. Hi all,
Here are Pigmeat Pete (Wesley Wilson) and Catjuice Charlie (Harry McDaniels) doing "The Gin Done Done It". God, I love this. I wish they had recorded fifty titles together. All best, Johnm sam
i don't think this has been posted, yet. there's afew of these from bluesohashi (is he a member here)? i, for one, would love to know where these videos come from. Oddly enough, a friend of mine played piano a good deal like Hobart before his stroke. Makes me want to be better than just a chord man on the ol 88. Absolutely love it!
