From the Clash site: http://www.clashmusic.com/news/american-folk-hero-tom-paley-has-died What a great musician Tom Paley was. I remember hearing his version of "Railroad Blues" from "New Lost City Ramblers, Vol. 3" on the radio when I was a kid, and when I heard that it was by the New Lost City Ramblers, I thought it took all three of them to play the guitar part! It was just Tom. He was a ripping banjo player, too, in both clawhammer and Old-Time two and three finger styles. His version of "Marching Through Georgia" on the old Elektra album "Folk Banjo Styles" was die-happy stuff. He was one of the earliest urbanites to figure out and play a lot of this music "right". If you like Old-Time and Country Blues, you owe him a lot, whether you know it or not. I sure do.
All best, Johnm This news just breaks my heart. Tom's work with the NLCR set a benchmark for my playing clarity. Rest well, good sir!
I worked with him on a project about 20 years ago and he was generous, thoughtful and very genuine in our dealings. He will be missed.
