I tell you, all them scounds could play good; I don't know which one was best. I liked that Lonnie - he was the big fat one - I liked his violin playin', but that other one, what played violin and piano, too, and everything, I believe it was Bert. They both played so good, it'd be hard to tell how to judge which one played the best - Houston Stackhouse remembers the Chatmon brothers, The Voice of the Blues

Mike Dowling Spring Tour - East Coast (NC to ME)
« on: March 27, 2006, 06:02:36 AM »
In May I'll be looking forward to some pretty rare East Coast performances and workshops by Mike Dowling. Here's his itinerary. Hope you all come out and support his tour.

Blues In The Blueridge - Little Switzerland, NC, May 1 -5
(Music In The Mountains) in Little Switzerland, NC. This is a new camp that starts on May first and will feature Scott Ainslie, Mary Flower, Del Rey, Steve James and Mike Dowling. It's held at the Wildacres Retreat, which looks like a fantastic venue for a camp.

The Good Coffee House - Brooklyn, NY May 12
Mike will do two solo sets at Brooklyn's finest acoustic music program. Ian Zack is doing a great thing creating this home for acoustic roots artists in NYC.

Inn On The Blues - York, Maine May 14
Mike will head up to Maine for some dates associated with the Seacoast Guitar Society. His visit will kick off with a performance on Sunday at the Inn on The Blues. 7PM

Seacoast Guitar Society - Acoustic Outfitters, Stratham NH May 15
This guitar workshop will be conducted at Acoustic Outfitters. 6-8PM $25
(http://www.aomusicshop.com/).

Good Times Cafe - Hinesburg, VT - May 16-17
Mike finishes up the Northeast portion of the tour with two gigs at the Good Times Cafe.

Webnash - New Canaan, NY - May 19-21
This will apparently be the swan song for Webnash. From what I hear, the workshop will be attended by several of the alumni from the past few years. So it could be a real barn burner.

See you in May! Keep on pick'n and grin'n.

It's probably my brain not working to capacity . . . . . . but I don't have an "add event" button when I launch my events calendar

Do you see "Events Calendar" under the "User Menu" on the left column?

So...on a serious note:
John Cowan and I went to Eric Schoenberg's shop in Tiburon a few weeks ago , and saw
Mike Dowling do  2 sets of sweet picking and singing, on his Style O with slide, his old wooden acoustic ax, and a nice box with a pickup . He was terrific. A great voice with natural pitches, amazing fretboard movement, and great variety of  tunes. We really enjoyed it. Bruce Nix was in the audience, and after most folks cleared out, Nix picked up an O hole archtop built by Bruce Sexauer (from Marin ,builds some Schoenberg OMs and cutaways), big yellow box with great projectio, and he and Mike picked a few duets, jaxx and swing tunes. THAT was too cool. Bruce teaches at Mike's Yellowstone camp.

Anyway, if youse guys are close to any of his gigs, youse should go!

Bunch a wise acres over here, huh?

I "SEE" the Events Calendar on the User Menu, but in the options above the calendar I get an assortment of viewing options. I don't see an ADD EVENT button. I've used Safari and Firefox. Sure this isn't broken?

Yeah, there should be a big Red Plus sign above the monthly calendar.  If you run your mouse over it it should read Add Event.  There is also a "Post New Event" link under the mini calendar on the right hand column of the front page.  Eitehr of those will get you there... so lemme know.

Mike Dowling was seen last night in the East of the UK, do not miss this man.  Don't let him leave any venue without doing his version of Leroy Carr's Midnight Hour Blues.  His gear poses an interesting conundrum - how do you get an 000-35 with an aged top?
