One morning I was walking 'long
I heard a voice and I saw no one I saw the light, I saw the light mama I saw the light, I saw the light comin in the ? I saw the light that a gambler dont see When I saw the light it was shining on me I saw the light, I saw the light mama I saw the light, I saw the light Dont you wish your mother could rise and tell When you're standin at the gates of hell I saw the light, I saw the light mama I saw the light, I saw the light Oh if ya hada been there when I came through IF ya hada gods vision of (midnight dew?) saw the light, I saw the light mama I saw the light, I saw the light Oh John declared that he saw a man Had ten thousand ?? in his hand (visions in his head?) saw the light, I saw the light mama I saw the light, I saw the light Oh satan is mad I am glad He missed that soul that he thought he had saw the light, I saw the light mama I saw the light, I saw the light I dont know what your mother would say about this old world aint no friend to her saw the light, I saw the light mama I saw the light, I saw the light I looked east and I lookin west The fire gonna burn up ? (the wilderness?) saw the light, I saw the light mama I saw the light, I saw the light Try this:
I saw the light, I saw the light MOURNER I saw the light, I saw the light FROM HEAVEN COME DOWN Oh if ya hada been there when I came through OH THEIR HEAD GOT WET IN THE MIDNIGHT DEW Oh John declared that he saw a man Had ten thousand ?? in his hand (visions in his head?) sounds like "ten foundations" not sure of this one but maybe a Bible search would reveal something I dont know what your mother WANNA STAY HERE FOR this old world aint no friend to her I looked east and I looked IN THE WEST The fire gonna burn up the wilderness -- right Doug
For the "ten thousand" line I'm hearing:
"Oh [or possibly Old] John declared that he saw a man Had ten thousand blessings in his hand" Well, to muddy things up, I always heard:
I saw the light, moaners Although, with a colloquial accent either makes sense. John declared that he saw a man Had ten thousand Christians in his hand Tom Irusan
We're just about to get it. The word after "I Saw the Light" is "mourners", an old term for the congregation. I thought at first the line was "ten thousand nations in his hand", but on further listening I think it's "ten foundations in his hand". I don't know of any biblical reference for this, but that's what it sounds like. The chorus is really "I Saw the Light from Heaven come down", but the last part is left out mostly.
