RE: Jazz Fiddler

I believe the beginning is:

"Listen here people, gonna play a little tune, it's a jazz story about the Mississippi Coon it's too bad, it's too.... listen to that old violin."

It's sung a little clearer on take 1.

Agree with all of it except the 'story' phrase, I hear something like this:

Listen here people, gonna play a little tune, it's a jazz 'bout another Mississippi tune, it's too bad, it's too.... listen to that old violin

And welcome to the forum Penghuhwin.

Pretty sure Frankie had it right a few years ago with:

It's the jazz violin of a Mississippi coon

Listen to the way Walter pronounces violin as vio-leen; he just changes the stress a bit in this line.

I agree, frankie has it right. Walter is cramming the syllables of violin into a small space, pretty much dropping the 'o' and it comes out more like "vi'lin", and later "vi'leen". Pretty clear to me.

I'm getting the guitar part down alright, but the lyrics are little hard to hear. Can anyone help?  Here's what i got so far:

I Am The Devil

Yes I'm the devil, oh and I don't care none
Yes I'm the devil, oh and I don't care none
Said yea right the devil, I'm gonna take souls as they come

It has been time that you was done well
But you come down here you gonna catch some hell
Refrain:
Yes I'm the devil, oh and I don't care none
I said yea right I'm the the devil gonna take souls as they come

Goin' to town tonight all the way cross the city
The wind  blows on top [ ? ] those girls and and you know its a really pity.(or is it rarely beauty)
Refrain:
Yes I'm the devil, oh and I don't care none
Said yea right I'm the devil I'm gonna take souls as they come

Devil is a man in your face he'll grin
All he'll want you to do is just a little of sin
Refrain:
Yes I'm the devil oh and i don't care none
Said yea right I'm the devil gonna take souls as they come

Instrumental Break

Stayin all day don't get out until dark night is the time i get my business right
Refrain:
yes im the devil oh and i don't care none, said right  the devil im gonna take souls as they come

Some start at twelve some start at two when you come to this place i know just what to do
Refrain:
yes im the devil oh and i don't care none, said yea rightthe devil gonna take souls as they come.

Anyone know them better? i missing a few words i think. >:D

Hi crustypicker,
If you format your lyrics beginning each line with a capital letter, typing each line that is sung separately rather than doing 2X at the end of line, and having breaks between verses, they will be easier to read, will more accurately reflect the way they were sung, and will be easier to transfer to Weeniepedia.  You've been asking for a lot of help--how about some help back?  Re the D7 or D at the beginning of the song, trust your ears, and keep listening until you can tell for sure what is being played.  Believe me, you don't need help to figure that out.
All best,
Johnm

Hi, Crusty,

I took the liberty of formatting the first half of I Am The Devil, up through the instrumental break.  The rest is left as an exercise for the student.   :P

"Shake Hands and Tell Me Goodbye" Mississippi Sheiks
« Reply #83 on: August 11, 2013, 10:39:02 AM »
Hi folks,
Trying to decipher another Miss. Sheiks tune -- any help appreciated, esp. with the last verse!

I don?t want you no more sweet baby, shake hands and tell your daddy goodbye
I don?t want you no more sweet baby, didn?t love me nohow
Last night, night before, I saw another man knocking on your door
I don?t want you no more sweet baby, shake hands and tell your daddy goodbye

I don?t want you no more sweet baby, shake hands and tell your daddy goodbye
I don?t want you no more sweet baby, you didn?t love me nohow
I worked all the winter, winter was tough (weather was tough?)
With another man just a-strutting your stuff
I don?t want you no more sweet baby, shake hands and tell your daddy goodbye

I don?t want you no more sweet baby, shake hands and tell your daddy goodbye
I?m leaving this town tomorrow, no use to sorrow (sob?) and cry
I was good when you was sick, and good when you was well
?No use to pray when you get in hell
I don?t want you no more sweet baby, shake hands and tell your daddy goodbye

I don?t want you no more sweet baby, shake hands and tell your daddy goodbye
I ???? I ain't got you
Still you pass me by
I worked all the winter, In the chilly wind
You giving your loving to the other men
I don?t want you no more sweet baby,  shake hands and tell your daddy goodbye

I worked all the winter, winter was tough (weather was tough?)

I hear 'winter' there, too.

I?m leaving this town tomorrow, no use to sorrow (sob?) and cry

I hear SIGH and cry

I ???? I ain't got you

I hear 'I done everything I could do'

"Baby Please Make a Change" Mississippi Sheiks
« Reply #86 on: January 11, 2015, 04:00:50 PM »
Trying to decipher the last verse, maybe the collective Weenie ear can help! Here's what I have. In searching the web for these lyrics I was astonished to find on Youtube a rendition by a trio consisting of Hugh Laurie, Tom Jones, and Irma Thomas.  Actually it is not as bad as I expected!  Not a Sheiks groove at all (and they really lose their rhythm towards the end) , but at least there is a fiddler.  Tom Jones is a pretty good singer, Irma Thomas is of course completely wasted on this but....Irma Thomas as your backup singer, just imagine!  Here's a link in case you want to check it out.

Okay now back to the business at hand, can anyone figure out the last verse??

Baby Please Make A Change

I beg you baby, both day and night
Please don?t scold me, just treat me right
CHORUS:  Baby please make a change, baby please make a change
Baby please make a change, I think it will do you good.

There?s a change in the ocean, and the deep blue sea
Be kind to your baby, there?ll be a change in me

I have forgiven, all day and all night
I?m going I?m going, can?t you change my mind

BREAK

I tell you something, think it will do you good
You better get your man, out of this neighborhood

Darling I love you, and I ain?t mad
If I tell you again, it will keep you sad

I?m going away but I?ll, be back again
???????

Hi Suzy,
Happy New Year!  It sounds like he's singing:
Bear this in mind, I'll be forever on your wind

I think the next-to-last verse is:
Darling, I'm tellin' you, and I ain't mad
If I tell you again it will be too sad

I have no idea what "forever on your wind" means!
All best,
Johnm

Nice! Somehow that last track of vol.3 didn't import onto my hard drive so this is a lovely surprise. A new Sheiks song :)
I agree with John on the next to last verse, applaud him on the 'bear this in mind' and suggest
6.2 'forever on your WAY'N ... baby please' for the last verse.

also verse 3 sounds like
I'LL HAVE FUNNY FEELINGS, all day'n all night
I'm going I'm going, IF you change my LIFE

(though the word life drops away it sounds like it begins with L rather than M)

Gumbo, I'm thinking third verse is:
I'll have funny feelings, all day and all night
I'm going I'm going, can't you change my mind

John, I think you are spot on with "Bear this in mind" in the last verse, but I still can't figure out what comes after that.
