He [Ted Bogan] was playing with picks that you put on your fingers and I didn't like that as an accompaniment, so I made him throw them away and I told him I would play the lead and he would play the accompaniment - Carl Martin on hooking up with Ted Bogan (Blues & Rhythm #218 Stompin' In Knox County)

Leo Sarkisian Obituary

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/leo-sarkisian-who-brought-african-music-to-listeners-around-the-world-dies-at-97/2018/06/30/612b9bae-7a47-11e8-80be-6d32e182a3bc_story.html?utm_term=.0d54ca84e403

I've lived overseas in places where Voice of America and other shortwave stations are valued sources of information and music, despite the low fidelity, so I got acquainted with Leo's program in the late 80s in China -- 20 years after it first aired.

International field recordings were Leo's specialty--to my knowledge he never did fieldwork in the States a la the Lomaxes.

Worth a read, especially for the wisdom in the last paragraph.

Also, here's a link to a story about the archive he left behind:
