I've lived overseas in places where Voice of America and other shortwave stations are valued sources of information and music, despite the low fidelity, so I got acquainted with Leo's program in the late 80s in China -- 20 years after it first aired.

International field recordings were Leo's specialty--to my knowledge he never did fieldwork in the States a la the Lomaxes.

Worth a read, especially for the wisdom in the last paragraph.
