Lonnie Johnson violin recordings
« on: January 30, 2016, 06:24:15 AM »
While reading the book Early Blues The First Stars of Blues Guitar, Jas Obrecht talks a lot about Johnson's violin playing. Can anyone recommend select recordings that feature examples of his playing?  I have the two fine records, Violin Sing the Blues For Me and He Sure Do Pull Some Bow, I am looking for recordings featuring his violin playing, blues or with early jazz artists.

TIA

Rob

Those two compilations have a couple cuts with Lonnie on violin: "Violin Blues" with Prater and Hayes as the the Johnson Boys, "Memphis Stomp" with the same lineup but billed as "The Blue Boys." Lonnie played violin on most of the sides from his early Okeh session. There's even one or two cuts with him and his brother both fiddling. You can find them on this Document CD:

He also played fiddle as an accompanist to singers like Luella Miller and Victoria Spivey.

Thank you :) I have been a Lonnie Johnson fan since the 1990ies - but as apparently almost anyone else, fixed on his guitar. I was actually surprised myself that out of my head I was truely unable to name more than one or two violin blues tunes by him.

The Document vol 3 I think has his violin recordings with Prater and Hayes.

Banjochris, thanks.  I am pretty old school and I will look up that CD.
