How to embed a YouTube video in a post
« on: January 19, 2007, 01:14:09 PM »
THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW ARE NOW OUT OF DATE. TO LINK TO A YOUTUBE VIDEO, SIMPLY ADD THE URL IN YOUR POST. THE FORUM SOFTWARE WILL AUTOMATICALLY EMBED YOUR VIDEO.

Since we added this feature but never actually explained it, here's a crash course in how to embed a YouTube video in one of your posts.

1) When you enter your message, you might notice there are a few new buttons above the smilies. Sixth from the left is a YouTube button with a tiny little YouTube icon.

2) Click it and it will automatically add the following code to your post:

Code: [Select]
[yt=425,350][/yt]
3) Now you just add in the part of the YouTube URL identifying the particular clip. Each URL begins with "http://youtube.com/watch?v=" then ends with a code that identifies a video clip. This is some gobbledygooky looking string of characters like SQ0TqzC6IZY.

4) The URL for YouTube videos can be found on the YouTube page, just to the right of the video clip you want to link to and embed. Just copy the string of characters after the "=" sign in the URL, then paste that string of characters into your post, right between the bracketed codes. So like this:

Code: [Select]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ0TqzC6IZY
Looks like algebra right now, but it should result in an embedded video once you post your message. Note that there should be no spaces anywhere in there, just the string of characters between the bracket sets.

Here's the real thing, the exact same code as above:

The only other thing to know about is that some YouTube members prevent embedding videos on external websites (i.e., like WeenieCampbell). In this case, the above technique won't work, and you have to post the complete YouTube URL as a regular ol' link, like so:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=SQ0TqzC6IZY

Hope that's clear as mud! :D
