I cut him with my Barlow, I kicked him in the side, I stood there laughing over him, while he wallowed 'round and died - Bessie Smith, Send Me To The 'Lectric Chair
Been some time since I posted something to the Back Porch. I've finally had a little time to play in the past couple days. I'd been listening to Ishmon Bracey and this tune came on, reminding me that I'd started figuring it out after the discussions in JohnM's Ishmon Bracey lyrics thread. I subsequently got a half decent take and thought I'd post it. I'm still actually trying to figure out what to do about the Teddy Darby-like riff after the 2nd and 3rd lines of the verses, but what the hey...
Yeah!! That is mighty fine UB, especially the vocal, which you could get a little closer to the mic with, if you ask me. Sounds very relaxed the way you are singing thru the fist line into the second.Good breath control. Working for those adenoidal resonators, too. Very cool.
And that little "no name" parlor you got from Todd really comes across. Great touch. You're talkin' about the lick with the little slide up at the beginning? I'll have to listen to the CD, but whatever you're substituting for, it sounds good.
You've inspired me. I'll try to get that Fuller tune I've been working on, a slow blues in G, Screamin' and Cryin', up soon.
All for now. John C.

Thanks for putting this up, Uncle Bud, it sounds great. I really like your heavy time and the way you dig in on the upbeats. You sound comfortable singing it, too. Hearing you do it reminded what a great song "Suitcase Full of Blues" is, and that's the sign of good rendition. Way to go! All best, Johnm
Thanks for the encouragement, gents. Wax, you're right, I'll never be a sound engineer. I had a pair of binaural stealth-style mics clipped to a music stand. Should have raised the stand. Next time. Also had the levels peaking a bit too much which seems more noticeable at the lower bit rate.
Hi Roscoe and thanks. The guitar is a no-name parlor guitar, ladder-braced, probably from the 20s, possibly 10s. I got it from Todd Cambio at Fraulini Guitars, www.fraulini.com.
For those who might care, the song is played in Spanish tuning. Bracey played it pitched at A or so, I'm pitched at G or so, and am using an unwound 3rd string.
