I know almost nothing, but Backroom Records and Pastries, the Montreal partner involved in this, is within walking distance of home for me. I still haven't been. I'd heard about their pastries actually, then separately about the record store. And now this. They're putting out Washington Phillips on vinyl - and selling pastry - a few blocks away from me. Truly strange. It is literally run out of a back alley shack as far as I know, and so not open this time of year due to the cold.

The fellow running it got a lot of attention a while ago when he found a rare acetate of some of the Velvet Underground's first recordings in different mixes/takes.

Ha!  The Portland branch is just a few blocks from me.  And I've never been there either.  George Rezendes mentioned it to me up at PT, but I forgot about it until now.  I'll check it out.

Thanks for that link, Jostein.  I had temporarily forgotten about Honest Jon's and had not found their website before.  Impressive stuff and quite a bit on good old vinyl, but not at exorbitant prices.

I finally made it to the Portland branch yesterday.  I need to get me a record player.  So much great stuff.  My friend picked up a Junior Kimbrough album with Kenny Brown and a Burnside or two in the rhythm section ($8 used) as well as some great scores for a buck a piece: a Teddy Wilson record with a couple Billie tracks on it; Albert Ammons with Lonnie Johnson on a couple tracks; some Dizzie; and some '70s Stephane Grappelli.  I was just so amazed to see all this stuff on vinyl.  Some of it is out of my price range at the moment, but it's just so great to see this stuff out there.  Frank Stokes, Washington Phillips, Robert Pete Williams, Son House, all the Fat Possum folks....  It's a beautiful thing.
