unwound third string in set
« on: February 13, 2006, 11:06:26 AM »
Does anyone know of an light acoustic guitar string set which includes an unwound 3rd string??

I know I saw one in my local store not too long ago, but now I can't remember the brand and the store does not have them.

Why not buy single strings?  You can buy several guages to experiment with.

(This was a quick search -- there are probably cheaper singles to be had.)

Yes, buy a selection... i used to try using them for slide but the unwound 26 was bit hard on the fingers!
(That's enough of that. Ed)

With unwound thirds, go down a size or two from the wound third for similar tension. I use an unwound .22 in place of a wound .24 and an unwound .24 in place of a wound .26.

There's a John Pearse set with an unwound 3rd for resonators, the Josh Graves set, but it's a .026 which would not be useful (or safe, I suspect) on a regular guitar. I think I'm using a .021 or  .022 right now as an unwound 3rd.
