Always loved this song; it's hard to do Willie Walker's version justice though...

It may be hard doing it justice, but you've done it.

I went through a period several years ago when I was traveling to Greenville, SC, where Walker lived, quite often. The old part of town is pretty small, and it doesn't seem like the kind of place that would generate a classic murder ballad. I always wondered where the story came from--can't find anything about its origins.

Great Carl! Are you doing that rapid brush with the middle finger, first finger or both? Can't really discern on the video. excellent vocal on this one too. :)

I agree, great version!

The events of the ballad happened in Atlanta in 1921-1922 -- Frank Dupre was the man's name; there's quite a bit of information on the crime on the internet if you dig around a bit. But the song is pretty much what happened.

Chris Smith's 1995 two part feature referred is lengthy and contains a photo of Frank Dupree and other relevant illustrative matter. If folk are interested I could PDF the pages and hopefully post as attachments.

I've PDF'd the 9 pages but each file is on average 1.3mb due to the many illustrations of Frank, his wife, solicitor general, scene of crime etc. It won't let me attached or post the lot. Is there a less torturous way of posting these rather than by trial and error which is driving me to distraction?

How many 1.3 meg files are there Alan?  You might open a Drop Box account - or email the files to one of us moderators and we'll put them on drop box.

Eight and one of 900kb. If at all possible I'd rather not have yet another "application" to keep track of. I could email 2 or 3 at a time, if the receipt is willing.

If you have or open a gmail account, their new "Drive" system allows massive files to be sent in an email. Its not a bad reason to have one.  "Dropbox" or "Send it" become essentially obsolete.

Does Drive allow public files for download? The idea is for BH to not have to email.

Mighty fine indeed!
That tremelo brush really makes it a standout.
