"You Got To have Your Dollar" (1940)
Recorded By Blind Boy Fuller (With Sonny Terry) "When I had money I had women and friends for miles around, When I had money I had women and friends for miles around. Now I'm broke, women and friends can't be found. Says I'm talkin' 'bout a dollar I mean a dollar bill, Says I'm talkin' 'bout a dollar I mean a dollar bill. And if you got your dollar You sure can't get your order filled (?) If I could only read... read my little woman's mind, Said If I could only read... read my little woman's mind. I wouldn't be here worryin' and stay(in') blue all the time. My baby keep me guessin'.... 'bout things I want to know, Says my baby keep me guessin'.... 'bout things I want to know. Says she got me doin' things that I never did before." Hi
I have worked out the guitar part and most of the lyrics for Blind Boy Fuller's Jivin Woman Blues. Can anyone suggest what the first line to the last verse is? Here is the rest Jiving Woman Blues Got a gal called Betty May She go out and truck all day She ain't jivin' She's just crazy that way Scat over chorus Have my dinner ready Don't let my coffee get cold Don't forget to save My sweet jelly roll She's not crazy She's just jiving that way No vocal over chorus She don't go to bed early at night Speak about loviin' she want to fuss and fight She's not crazy She's just jiving that way Scat over chorus She go to bed with a rag tied round her head Speak about love she swear she almost dead She's not crazy She's just jiving that way No vocal over chorus ? Had to take a bath before you went to bed She's not crazy She's just jiving that way Cheers, Chris Hi Chris,
I think it's something like "Had a whisky, get drunk and [it] run right to your head". Cheers, UB I got:
Had a whiskey you drunk it, run right to your head Also, here's the scat break after verse 1, yes folks I actually transcribed it: Oh, bap'm bappy, ohh, za zee Oh be'bm'bop bap bap bow bop'm'be'bum bop, zee za zerr The second scat break goes like this: Ohh, yeah pretty, ohh, zee zee Oh beeby beep a bop bop'm bow (pregnant silence) ...Yeaah..! Hope I've spelled all that right Anyone have the lyrics handy or can point me to them. There is alot I can't make out or am unsure of. Any help appreciated.
Mark What have you got so far, Mark? If you post it, folks will give a listen and see if they can fill in the blanks.
All for now. John C. dave stott
what's that smell like fish??
it must be HOT TUNA !!! LOL.....every time I hear that song or read that title, it comes to mind... Dave Okay John this is what I have thus far:
First half or each verse, What that smell like fish mama ?? really want to know (2) Second half of first verse: Smell like Pudding, Ain't no Pie Seem to think you know you never ?? Second half of second verse: Smell like Sardine, Ain't no can ? (something about another man) Second half of third verse: Smell like Pudding, Ain't no Pie Really good to me and it ain't no lie Second half of fourth verse: Make you weep and it make you moan (Same doggone thing that make you leave your home??) and while we are on the subject do you know what position that he plays it out of. It appears to be in the key of F. This is just your standard rag progression, think Hot Tamales. This is a progression that I would play in the C position but in this case it would be capoed way up. Is he playing it out of an E position? Thanks in advance. Mark dave stott
according to the database on Weenie, BBF played that song in the key of C with a capo on the 1st fret and the guitar tuned slightly sharp
What's That Smells Like Fish C+1' Yeah, Mark, check out the Keys To The Highway section in the left border menu, right under Weenie Juke Radio. Select Guitar Keys and Positions by Artist and see who we've worked on so far. As fate would have it, I worked on the BBF section.
Maybe I can give a listen to WTSLF later tonight. All for now. John C. I seem to remember the "chorus line" was something like:
What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know The rhyme for pie was satisfied, I think. Let's see what the other guys will come up with for the verses. What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know Smell like Pudding, Ain't no Pie Seem to think you know you never satisfied What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know Smell like Sardine, Ain't no can ? (something about another man) What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know Smell like Pudding, Ain't no Pie Really good to me and it ain't no lie What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know Make you weep and it make you moan (Same doggone thing that make you leave your home??) What that smell like fish mama, tell me if you really want to know dingwall
Here's my version of 'What's That Smells Like Fish'. Spoken parts are in brackets. Also, I've only used quotation marks in the first verse to show the dialogue ? the others are similar.
"What's that smell like fish, mama?" "Food, if you really want to know." "What's that smell like fish, baby?" "Food, if you really wants to know." "Smell like puddin' and it ain't no pie. Same thing that you know you have to buy. What's that smell like fish?" "Food, if you really wants to know, I mean, Food, if you really wants to know." (Yeah.) What's that smell like fish, mama? Food, if you really wants to know. What's that smells like fish, baby? Food, if you really wants to know. Smell like sardines and it ain't in no can. Same doggone thing you chucked at the other man. What that smell like fish, mama? Food, if you really wants to know, I mean, Food, if you really want to know. What's that smell like fish, baby? Food, if you really wants to know. (Yeah.) What's that smells like fish, mama? Food, if you really wants to know. Smell like puddin' and it ain't no pie. Really good to me and it ain't no lie. What that smell like fish, mama? Food, if you really wants to know, still tellin' you, Food, if you really wants to know. (Yeah.) (Play it a long time. Play it till it gets good to me.) What's that smell like fish, mama? Food, if you really wants to know. What's that smell like fish, baby? Food, if you really wants to know. Make you weep and it'll make you moan. Same doggone thing made me leave my home. What that smell like fish, baby? Food, if you really wants to know, I mean, Food, if you really wants to know. Does anyone have the nerve to sing this song in public?! Its pretty crude even by Bo Carter and BBF standards. What sort of reaction does it get?
