So. I just started a record label [article]
« on: December 31, 2014, 08:30:13 AM »
As the title implies, I (along with one of my best friends), just started a record label. With a business model inspired by Paramount (you know, before the depression hit, while it was still successful) and Vocalion in the '30s (payment per song, simple setup for recordings, large variety of artists) as well as Chess in the '50s and '60s (we're doing live recordings, having an in house songwriter for our artists a la Willie Dixon) and our first release being my album featuring some CB covers. I hope you all find it interesting with more to come when the first release is made, and as Lemon Jefferson once said, "Happy New Year Folks!"

Also, for any of those who have taken notice of me in the past, perhaps with my completist rant on a Lead Belly post a few weeks ago (For Christmas for myself, I paid $150 for a box set containing 16 alternative takes of songs, all but four I already have other versions of. Yes, I'm that kind of completist, or maybe regarding my Son House documentary (just got approved by Sony for music licensing, took a little longer considering my age, which was fair enough) or even for those who haven't heard of me before, I have one final thing to say.

I'm James, the one on the right in the photo.

All best to this idea you have. When I was 15 I was just starting discovering the blues. It seems like you boys been playing and listening to it a long time.

Thank you Blind Arthur - noticing your point on courage, it does look to be difficult, but hopefully it will be worth it!

Good luck man!

Thanks for the wishes TexCo :)

Thanks Harry. Most of my first blues all came from looking at my Mum's CD's liner notes then following up on artists, but in grade 7 music class, both Nicholas and I were turned onto more real older blues (looking at the roots of Robert Johnson for an assignment) by our teacher. So only a couple years, but it hooked me instantly. Nick's more of a 60s British Blues fan, but for me, there's nothing that competes with the down home country blues. Will post when first release is made and you can judge my playing for yourself!

Always nice to know someone still wants to know how it's going :)

As I mentioned earlier, just got my approval from Sony to license music and soon, probably within the week I'll get back in touch with them (the automated system would have been quicker, but they've made phone calls and meetings available as options, and I intend to use my time off and before recording to follow up here) to take further steps, which will be coming up with the final numbers for the budget.

I get confused when I have to make a bank deposit or pay a simple bill, don't think I could set up a company. Hats off to ya.
