John had recently flown for the first time and did not like it at all. Pat Sky tried to reassure him, saying it was a pretty safe means of transport and adding, "Anyway, when it's your time to go, it's your time to go." John thought a while and answered, "Yeah, but what if you're on the plane and it's the pilot's time to go?" - from Phil Ratcliffe's Biography of Mississippi John Hurt
To totally hijack this thread, I see on the CD track listing two very interesting titles: Starvation Moan by Ed Bell and "Preshious" Lord by Joe Taggart. Can anyone give any info on what these are and when they were recorded?

"Preshious Lord" was recorded by Joel Taggart in Chicago for Vanity Records in 1948. "Starvation Moan" is a Columbia test pressing recorded by Ed Bell in Atlanta in 1930.
Well, that's pretty damn cool. Has the Ed Bell been known to have been found previously, or is this the first we're hearing of it? According to B&GR, it was an unissued recording from 4 December 1930, as jostber notes, and the same session featured three other unissued recordings: Drunk Spell Blues, You've Got to Hand It Up to Him, and She Can Use That Thing. I guess it would be asking too much that those recordings turned up as well. Or...?
I too am a huge "Frog Blues and Jazz Annual" fan... for those of you not familiar with it, you might want to take a look at the review of Annual #2 on my blog, Vernacular::Shellac:
Anyone who has ordered these has had nothing but good things to say and no regrets on price, which for a book with rare photos on quality paper stock and a CD (not to mention the articles) and international delivery seems pretty reasonable to me. They don't fit with everyone's budget, but when they do, they seem to more than satisfy. They're on my xmas list.
And welcome to WC, Okeh78/Bill.

I really want to get these. ?22 apiece seems reasonable enough - if you've got it. I'll have to see what I can do about getting some form of disposable income.
