I've been listening a lot lately to Taylor-Griggs Louisiana Melody Makers, a string band from northern Louisiana who recorded 10 sides in 1928 and 1929. They have a very distinctive sound with a bowed bass in addition to fiddle, guitar and mandolin. Lots of dreamy waltzes which I love but today's obsession is this polka (??) called Ione. Ione was the wife (I think) of the fiddler, and she played guitar on this session. I can't make out the words, here's what I've got but it's VERY sketchy.
I think the melody is very loosely based on (or inspired by) the old pop song My Own Iona (the Scottsdale String Band recorded this), but the Taylor Griggs version is pretty much a different song.
Some interesting reading about the band here: https://oldtimeparty.wordpress.com/2011/10/31/taylor-griggs-louisiana-melody-makers/
These lyrics don't make any sense at all and I'm sure they're not even close to right. Maybe someone out there can figure it out?
My own Ione, I hear your smile
You are the one, I?ve gone awhile
By day ? made me blue
My own Ione ?tis only you
