I Drink Good Whiskey

Merline Johnson – Vocals
Aletha Robinson – Piano
Big Bill Broonzy – Guitar
Fred Williams – Drums

July 30, 1937
Chicago, Illinois

Piano in Eb

INTRO

I drink good whiskey, good whiskey is all I crave
I drink good whiskey, good whiskey is all I crave
It looks like good whiskey, goin’ to carry me to my grave

I don’t want no liquor, that sells for 5 cents a shot
I don’t want no liquor, that sells for 5 cents a shot
Just give me bottle in bond, ‘cause it really hits the spot

If I get full of good whiskey, and stag’ up to your door
If I get full of good whiskey, and stag’ up to your door
Just forgive me this time, daddy, and I won’t be bad no more

I drink good whiskey, and I drinks it all the time
I drink good whiskey, and I drinks it all the time
And when I get drunk, daddy, ooh well well, baby, please don’t pay me no mind

PIANO SOLO

(Spoken: Yes, I wished I had a neck like a giraffe, so when I take a drink it would tickle my throat a long time)

Hey hey, good whiskey, Lord, it’s really killing me
Hey hey, good whiskey, Lord, it’s really killing me
If I can’t get good whiskey, I don’t know what will become of me

Yes, I wish I had a big package of ribs, so when I take a drink it would pick up my soul a long time

I'm pretty sure about "soul".  Not so certain about "big package of ribs".

Hi guys,
I think Merline's spoken comment is:

Yes, I wished I had a NECK LIKE A GIRAFFE, so when I take a drink it would TICKLE MY THROAT a long time.

That's pretty clever, if you ask me!
All best,
Johnm

INTRO

I was working on the project, begging Relief for shoes
I was working on the project, begging Relief for shoes
Because the rocks and the concrete, hoo well well, they giving my feet the blues

Yes, working on the project, with holes all in my clothes
Yes, working on the project, with holes all in my clothes
Trying to make me a dime, hoo well well, keep the rent man from putting me outdoors

I am working on the project, trying to make both ends meet
I am working on the project, trying to make both ends meet
But payday is so long, hoo well well, the grocery man won't let me eat

I am working on the project, my man’s spending all my dough
I am working on the project, my man’s spending all my dough
Now, I have waked up on him, hoo well well, and I won't be that weak no more

Working on the project, with payday three or four weeks away
Working on the project, with payday three or four weeks away
Now, how can you make things meet, hoo well well, when you can't get no pay
