EuroWeenie 2015 - yes 2015!!!
« on: May 13, 2014, 09:18:19 AM »
I thought I would be very efficient and get a date organised for next year  :o

However, the infamous South Lawns Hotel didn't seem that keen and have just rung me back citing that "your people bring their own drink...  and go down to village for sandwiches... and that the room is free....  and we have to put staff on.... and we are so busy with wedding that so we can't do any date except February sometime..."

Well boys and girls, we all knew the writing was on the wall last year when some were given black looks for having illicit whisky bottles, perchance they also noticed something this year as well  :-X   That said, I'd certainly dispute the fishpaste sandwich bit as that has never been a regular item.

Ergo, the bottom line is we need a new home.

Start looking, let me have any polite suggestions and I'll sound out the hotel in question. I think my only real stipulation is it has to be on a line south of Cheltenham and preferably in easy reach of a motorway.

(That's enough of that. Ed)

Cheeky sods. If it didn't take ten minutes or more to find someone to serve at the bar, people may have used it more. And you were made to fell like you were being a nuisance when you asked!  And I'm not aware of them doing anything much for lunch.

I'll have a think.

Berlin would suit me. Easier to get to from Edinburgh. Me with my gammy leg too...

They're stupid, how often are they booking out a dozen rooms in March/April?

What's the problem Richard, have you never been north of Cheltenham?

I'm sure we'll find somewhere that will be happy to take on a party of a dozen "folk" musicians.

We could stay in the New Forest and rent a village hall or a pub room to play in and stay in B&B, then Simon and Scratchy could get their curry's too.

And now you've let the cat out of the bag Simon, she wont be pleased!

Regarding another venue, I guess my previous 15 minute journey is going to get a bit longer :D

Bit of a drag isn't ?

Not sure about Berlin, if we went there would that mean I would be your furher for the weekend! - talk about bad taste  >:D

Maybe Cheryl could let Harvey know of some the other hotels she obviously turned down prior to settling on the Lawns.

Serious thought needed.

Berlin is easier to get to from Northern England than New Forest.  ;D

Planes aren't great for transporting collections of antique guitars though...

I had a look at the possibility of some sort of grouped holiday cottages- but the problem is likely to be that they tend to rent our for fixed periods- four nights or whatever and are usually based on double occupancy.  Not completely impossible, but likely to be tought to find something that really suits.

Personally, I'm quite drawn to the idea of somewhere self catering - such that we have the freedom to go out en masse for a meal, as well as to choose our own liquid supplies for the evening, but it may be more hassle than its worth.

You may have a rival / assistant...  I can certainly knock up a good batch of base sauce before I come!

Was thinknig of this sort of thing.  The one in question might be a bit expensive, and much depends on potential numbers etc  But if you get a place that has ten rooms, for under a grand a night, off season, ther emight be a deal to be done that works out at a similar or lower rate to the South Lawns, per person- and BYO drinks etc.

http://www.groupaccommodation.com/ga-main.property.details.asp?Property=Lambourn_House_Sheepdrove_Berkshire&adId=3135

In fact, looking at that site- there may well be quite a few venues with potential.  Some even with swimming pools.  We'd need an earlyish idea of numbers but the benefits of having a property to ourselves are pretty clear- and presumably get over the reluctance of hotels to have music being played etc as well.

How much was the South Lawns Richard?  And approximately how many did we have?  (I'm thinking it was about 10 players).

I do like curry but three times a day would be a bit much.  Like the idea of going self-catering!

I have been on several "self catering" music events in the UK and abroad, lasting several days to a week, organised by groups of EBA friends.
They can work very well, but catering requires advanced planning with responsibility and timing for each meal clearly agreed.
I have cooked meals for groups of 14 or more, accounting for individual preferences ( I don't eat meat for example, but am happy to cook it). If others wish to produce curries, I would be very happy to contribute Italian or Moroccan flavours.
Experience has shown that breakfasts are best left for each individual to get their own, WHEN they want it. Lunches are best kept very simple or eat out.

Have we got nearer to identifying a location yet?

I did have a look at the website I linked above and didn't immediately spot anything ideal.

I've been stupidly busy though, so have not put the time into looking that I would have liked at this point...
