Julius Lester came in with a music caravan. Bob Dylan was there, Pete Seeger, Theodore Bikel. But what they forgot about was that for about 100 miles around, [they] had some of the best traditional music ever. And we didn't have the consciousness then to pull that together, you know, to pull in those living legends of blues men and women who were right there - Worth Long, organizer for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, talking about a movement festival in Greenwood, Mississippi in 1960s

Mother McCollum Lyrics
« on: September 18, 2020, 06:10:52 PM »
Hi all,
The video in this post was just put up on YouTube today. It is "You Can't Hide", by Mother McCollum, whom I found out had one day in the studio for Vocalion in 1930. It's such a strong cut, and if she was accompanying herself, either as the backup guitarist playing chords and bass runs, or the slide guitarist playing in Vestapol, she was a ripping guitarist. I'd very much appreciate help with the last line of the last verse. I assume "Sacram'" is short of sacrament or sacramental. Here is "You Can't Hide":

INTRO

REFRAIN: You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
Well, you better get ready now

Well, gamblers, stop your gamblin',
And walk by Jesus' side
So when you see him comin',
You will have some place to hide

REFRAIN: You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
Well, you better get ready now

Well, listen, friends, let me tell you
Just what I'm trying to teach
Go say the word of Jesus,
Is a lamp unto your feet

REFRAIN: You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
Well, you better get ready now

REFRAIN: You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
Well, you better get ready now

We got some sisters, in the church,
They do just as they please
But in that Judgement morning,
They won't have no place and be

REFRAIN: You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Sacram' Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
Well, you better get ready now

REFRAIN: You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
You can't hide, in that Judgement Day
Well, you better get ready now

Edited 9/19 to pick up correction from harry

All best,
Johnm

B&GR indicates "acc: two unknowns, g"

Several sides that session were as by McCollum's Sanctified Singers, with Mother McM dueting with an unknown male and, "acc: unkown ,g; unknown, bj-2, 2nd g-3.

Also indicated: Intervening matrices are by Charley Jordan.

Can't help you with the line, Johnm

Sacram' day sounds right and makes sense - I think you've got it.

This verse cracks me up...

We got some sisters, in the church,
They do just as they please
But in that Judgement morning,
They won't have no place and be [?]

ha!  My reading - we've got some loose women in the congregation... it's an age old problem.

Great gospel cut.

2.4 You will have no some place to hide

I think the question mark is not neccesary. I hear it like that.

Thanks for the catch, Harry. I've made the change, and that tagline makes more sense now. Thanks!

Hi all,
Since Phil already posted the video of Mother McCollum's "Jesus Is My Air-O-Plane", I thought I would try to get the lyrics. Instrumentally, the song duplicates the set-up of "You Can't Hide", with a slide guitarist working out of Vestapol and a seconding guitarist accompanying out of F position in standard tuning. Here goes, and I'd very much appreciate help with any bent bracketed phrases or words.

INTRO

REFRAIN: Oh, Jesus is my air-o-plane
He holds this world in his hand
He rides along, He don't never fall
Jesus is my air-o-plane

REFRAIN: Well, Jesus is my air-o-plane
He holds this world in his hand
He rides all along, He don't never fall
Jesus is my air-o-plane

Some of these mornings, four o-clock
This old world's gon' reel and rock
Reeling and rocking, you can [hide no] fear
Jesus is coming in his air-o-plane

REFRAIN: Oh, Jesus is my air-o-plane
He holds this world in his hand
He rides along, He don't never fall
Jesus is my air-o-plane

SOLO

Well, some of these preachers, will be damned
[                   ], like my Lord said
[                   ], is comin' along
Jesus is coming in his [party line?]

REFRAIN: Oh, Jesus is my air-o-plane
He holds this world in his hand
He rides all along, He don't never fall
Jesus is my air-o-plane

REFRAIN: Oh, Jesus is my air-o-plane
He holds this world in his hand
He rides all along, He don't never fall
Jesus is my air-o-plane

You can run to the East, run to the West
You can't find no [form of rest?]
Some of these mornings, He's coming again
Comin' through in the air-o-plane

REFRAIN: Jesus is my air-o-plane
He holds this world in his hand
He rides all along, He don't never fall
Jesus is my air-o-plane

REFRAIN: Well, Jesus is my air-o-plane
He holds this world in his hand
He rides along, He don't never fall
Jesus is my air-o-plane

All best,
Johnm

Please don't bother like my Lord said?
He'll know he is comin' along?
