In a blog essay posted on the Web site of The American Scholar before Mr. Mitchell's death, Mr. Zinsser said Mr. Mitchell's approach to broken-down pianos (which musicians sometimes encounter on tour) illustrated his approach to life. "I learned long ago that it does no good to complain," Mr. Zinsser recalled Mr. Mitchell telling him. Instead, listen to the keys and put their flatness or sharpness to use. "You say, 'What does it do?' " said Mr. Mitchell, sounding an imaginary clinker on a piano. " 'Will it do anything? Let's check it out' - NY Times obit, reference to http://theamericanscholar.org/what-does-it-do/#.Uj3ivWR4ZEu

Steve James in NYC July 11-17

Hey folks, Steve James will be visiting New York this week. He will host a blues mandolin workshop on July 17, 2008, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The cost of the workshop is $65 and attendance will be limited to a dozen students. Additional information and registration for the workshop is available by emailing me at jon@secondfiddles.com. Steve tells me he's worked out a "real open tuning for mando" and is playing some slide mandolin these days. Eager to see what he's cooked up.

Steve James will appear at The Living Room on Friday July 11th with Ana Egge. http://www.livingroomny.com/music.html

He will also appear at Jalopy with me and the Second Fiddles on Saturday the 12th. Jalopy is a very cool luthier / performance space / theater owned by two very cool brooklynites in Red Hook. They've got beer and wine and some very hip instruments hanging on the walls. It's the new favorite hang of loads of people in NYC. Check it out.
