That's a sad piece and a beautiful understated performance. I'm a big Crudup fan, thanks for posting that.
I'll second that, nice one OM. May I take the opportunity to remind folk of this http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?amp;Itemid=60&topic=2273.0

Moving on many levels, and very sad indeed. Kapipitalism...FEH!

And what else was happening in 1927?  Amazing non blues footage. I thought some of you would be as moved by this as I am.

Watch Einstein as he emerges. He has just essentially been marginalized by Bohr and the quantum mechanics Mafia with whom he disagreed. My money's still on Albert though.
A great book on the subject is "Einstein Defiant" by a fellow named Bolles I believe.

1927, worlds away from the Mississippi flood. Hope no one minds this digression,

I've never been too sure about "Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle".

And where was Schroedinger, or his cat for that matter? See my article in Naturwissenschaften, 1928

Here's a 1935 film clip of Mamie Smith doing "Harlem Blues". The recent discussion of vocal harmonies came to mind when I listened to the great male vocal harmonies in the end of the song. Made me think of the mid 50's "Doo-Wop" craze, only some 20 years early, and very professionally done.

Cheers

Was that Ollie (Hardy) dubbed onto the end?

Hmm. Notice they were playing a trick taking card game, like Hearts. Not that I think they were actually looking at the cards. The same guy collected all the tricks.

Interesting, that's actually a cleaned up, simplified and shortened version of Crazy Blues, with the refs to wasting cops and Chinese folks doing opiates predictably redacted. Nice, I love Mamie Smith and that song in particular. Oh for the full version of Crazy Blues.
