It has come to my attention that folklorist in extreme has passed in Philly at the age of 84. I knew Roger at University of Pennsylvania - he was one of the first PhD's awarded in Folklore by that institution. His work on many aspects of African American cultural behaviors was broad and deep. A piece is in the current NYT site under obits. VALE, Roger.

I'm sorry to hear that Roger Abrahams passed away.  I remember hearing him perform at the '63 or '64 Philadelphia Folk Festival before he stopped performing.  He had a nice manner and a really nice singing voice.  We had an album he made for Prestige Folklore that I wish I could get now.  If his scholarship was on a par with his musicianship, I'm sure he made many contributions to the field.  Thanks for the work he did and condolences to his friends and family.
All best,
Johnm
