Several good ways to honor him, one is to play a song that you associate with him (and John Cephas), another is to read "Sweet Bitter Blues," by Phil W and Frank Matheis. It's essentially an "as told to" book, with Phil talking about his life, travels, music, and the Washington D.C. blues community that nurtured him. Long-time Port Townsend workshop participants will appreciate reading about many of the instructors we've met over the years.
A kind and generous man. Wish I had taken up the harmonica so I could have spent more PT time with him.
As Martha wrote in her announcement, "It is not lost on us that his impacts extend far and wide, we are very fortunate for that. So in his memory, love on each other, play music and share good food, laughter and folklore. That's what he would want."

After entering hospice on Monday, Phil Wiggins departed us Tuesday morning after a long battle with cancer. Wednesday was his 70th birthday. Phil was about as kind and gentle a person as you could hope to meet. His playing combined teamwork with a virtuosity all his own. Many of us here knew him, learned from him and jammed with him. Some of us enjoyed his salmon - and his famous all-day, Midnight Special barbecue! All of us bathe in the light of his goodness, generosity and grace. Hey Lindy, thanks for posting that link. Although I drive a more modern vehicle now, I still have my 2000 Tacoma with that plate on it. I did get a chuckle out of this line: "Approximately 20 blues fans from as far away as Austin, Dallas, and Houston attended." Wortham is about an hour south of Dallas, which is spitting distance in Texas. I'm guessing a few of those 20 also bought the plate.

Thanks very much for the help, Blues Vintage and banjochris. The line-by-line was super helpful, Chris. Musically, Guitar Shorty strikes me as a sort of East Coast version of Smoky Babe. Both players had tremendous rhythmic drive and an ability to come up with lyrics on the fly--I think Smoky Babe's "Hottest Brand Goin'" has a very similar feel to "Workin' Hard" though in "Hottest Brand Goin'" Smoky Babe is bragging about his workplace rather than registering a complaint.

Hi Eric,
It's a 4-disc set. The first two discs have all of Fuller's remaining titles that were not included on the JSP "Blind Boy Fuller, Vol. 1" set, which was also not exclusively Fuller tracks. The third and fourth discs of Fuller, Vol. 2 have all of the early tracks of Cedar Creek Sheik, Roosevelt Antrim, Virgil Childers, Sonny Jones, Floyd Council, Willie Trice, Rich Trice, Frank Edwards and Dennis McMillon. I think it's one of the very best JSP sets.
