?Folklore is not as easy to collect as it sounds. The best source is where there are the least outside influences, and these people, being usually under-privileged, are the shyest . . . The Negro, in spite of his open-faced laughter, his seeming acquiescence, is particularly evasive . . . The Indian resists curiosity by a stony silence. The Negro offers a feather-bed resistance.?
--Zora Neale Hurston, Mules and Men (1935) "If you want to be a good blues singer, people are going to be down on you, so dress like you?re going to the bank to borrow money".

Hipsters, flipsters and finger-poppin' daddies: knock me your lobes. -Lord Buckley
Eric, Here's the transcription of the full snippet he did on Groucho's You Bet Your Life, demonstrating some of his translations of Shakespeare into Hip. We were huge fans of Buckley in the late '60s. There is a ton of his recordings on Youtube, as well as many covers by various actors. "Over the fence of now and onto the pad of the vance."
Hipsters, flipsters and finger (snap, snap) poppin' daddies: knock me your lobes I came here to lay Caesar out, not to hip you to him The bad jazz that a cat blows wails long after he?s cut out The groovy is often stashed with their frames, so don?t put Caesar down Wax eric
Wax,
Yes, quite a few evenings were passed in those days listening to His Royal Highness of the Far Out...if you haven't heard Jonah and the Whale, or the Nazz, or Marc Antony's Funeral Oration, well, you haven't lived life to the fullest. I still have the Best of Lord Buckley on Elektra vinyl and play it from time to time. I had no idea he appeared on Groucho's show, but that's perfect. "Bebop? Avant-garde? Yeah, I heard of them. I also heard of these kids called the Bright Brothers ? Wright Brothers? Who claim they can make you fly. It'll never catch on, none of it".
- Art Hodes Ten thousand river commissions, with the mines of the world at their back, cannot tame that lawless stream, cannot curb it or define it, cannot say to it 'Go here,' or Go there, and make it obey; cannot save a shore which it has sentenced; cannot bar its path with an obstruction which it will not tear down, dance over, and laugh at - Mark Twain, Life on the Mississippi

Well I love you dear, I love you mighty.
Wishin’ your pajamas was just a little bit closer to my nightie. --Lottie Kate Bunkley and Jim Bunkley, "Black Gal", recorded by George Mitchell OK if you are going to include bumper stickers. I saw this one many years ago. Let me put it in perspective on the left bumper was: Marines Need a Few Good Men", on the right side of the bumper it said: When you hear the shouting you will know He is coming. How rich is that?
