I had to sell my soul to the devil in order to learn to play like [Tommy Johnson]. Only the fellow who called himself the devil offered to teach me guitar in ten easy lessons, fifty dollars down and ten dollars per lesson. And he wasn't a man, exactly, but a transvestite who called himself "Peetie Wheatstraw's mother-in-law - Steve Calt, attributed to Shirley Griffith

Del Rey, Suzy Thompson 2/9 Seattle House concert (afternoon)
« on: February 06, 2014, 08:54:30 PM »
Suzy Thompson & Del Rey Afternoon House Concert. Acoustic Blues that?s warm, wise, witty, womanly, and well-played by two virtuoso musicians. 3:00 pm, $20 suggested donation (kids half). At Bruce & Bonnie's near Columbia City. For reservations, directions, and info, contact us@wbandbonnie.com or 206-723-7684.

Suzy's in town to help Del Rey out on a new Del Rey CD (also with Matt Weiner, Arthur Migliazza and others) so there's likely to be some new material played at this show!

Suzy Thompson is the reigning queen of the acoustic blues fiddle, who's recently been gigging a lot with Jim Kweskin, among many other fine folks. She's been at the center of the bay area roots and acoustic music scene for decades, often with her husband, Eric Thompson, excelling at Blues, Jugband, Cajun, & Old-time music.
Del Rey was inspired to become a blues queen while hanging outduring her teenage years with the legendary Sam Chatmon, then in his 70s, of the Mississippi Sheiks and Bo Carter clan. She plays licks on her resonator guitar and uke that no one else can play, using 9 out of 10 fingers in the process. She tours regularly to all parts of the world and plays regularly here in Seattle. She's been a long time musical collaborator with Steve James and more recently with pianist Arthur Migliazza.
Del & Suzy have both been on the faculty of Centrum's Port Townsend Blues Workshop many of the last 10 years, and it's there that they developed a great duo. Both women are serious scholars of classic blues, especially following in the footsteps of such greats as Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith, and Victoria Spivey, as well as making their own compositions. This will be a great concert.
