We are told to our faces often that though our quartet is one of the best that has been heard up here, they would like us better if we would "play the Nigger" - their own words - more... every day we are made to understand that if there was less refinement about us and more fool, we would do better... When I have about three persons ask for the [spirituals] and about four score ask that we dance and sing songs which tell of Negroes stealing chickens, I make no pretensions to try to please - Tuskegee Quartet member Isaac Fisher, in a letter to Dr. Booker T. Washington, c. 1900

You can listen to clips here:

http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/1147358/a/Crawling+Kingsnake.htm

I assume this is out-of-print.  It even may be unavailable for purchase.  (I wouldn't assume the link to Amazon sellers at the above site is accurate.  It looks like it might be the same CD, but it is not clear.)

Has anyone heard the Testament recordings from the late 60's produced by the always reliable Pete Welding?

Of all the Honeyboy collections on CD, this one is my favorite. He was in strong voice on these recordings, and his guitar playing is full of confidence. And, yes, Pete Welding's Testament releases are some of the best blues recordings made during the 60's, in my humble opinion.

I do believe this *is* the album you're talking about: http://www.amazon.com/Crawling-Kingsnake-David-Honeyboy-Edwards/dp/B000003OJF/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1311163638&sr=1-1

The page referenced has no track listing, and the CD is listed as manufactured by "Hightone Records" (not Testament).  I'd check with the seller before buying.  Sometimes CDs from Amazon sellers are not properly identified.

Hightone has the whole Testament catalog (as much as has been re-issued) at this point.
All best,
