These things that have come down orally over the centuries had to be the cream of the crop, or they'd have died out a long time ago - Almeda Riddle, quoted in The Southern Journey of Alan Lomax - Words, Photographs and Music, by Tom Piazza, LoC 2013

Thanks for the post. It looks like Mack's materials found a good home. It doesn't surprise me that John Troutman had a hand in it. Now the work begins.

I hope I'm still alive when the research will be made public.

This will be interesting to see what will be published:

the archival material will be featured in upcoming releases from Smithsonian Books and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.

I think the work is been going on for a while. John Troutman must had have acces to the archive before it was donated but deliberately pushed the deadline so far ahead for "Biography of a Phantom". Maybe 'cause he knew it was coming to the Smithsonian before the end of the year. So now he has half a year to update the definitive manuscript. Or the book is already finished. It's all speculation I know. Troutman could even write book about unraveling "The Monster".

Biography of a Phantom
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/718575/biography-of-a-phantom-by-robert-mack-mccormick-with-editors-preface-and-afterword-by-john-w-troutman/

A Robert Johnson Blues Odyssey is musicologist Mack McCormick’s all-consuming search, from the late 1960s until McCormick’s death in 2015, to uncover Johnson’s life story.

The above line is exaggerated as McCormick in his later years lost interest on the subject but we'll see what will come out of Washington....

I've met and communicated with John. When time permits I'll send him an e-mail and ask about the Smithsonian's plans for Mack's materials.
