I found a note on the floor, it almost sent me off in a trance. She said "It's nothin' that you've done, I'm just leavin' in advance" - Memphis Slim, Empty Room Blues
The South Memphis String Band have a new CD out, Old Times There. Blues, medicine show tunes, country songs played on guitars, banjos, mandolins, harmonica, by Alvin Youngblood Hart, Jimbo Mathus and Luther Dickinson, plus acoustic bass from new member Justin Showah. Apparently recorded very quickly, and it shows in places, not a bad thing in my books, since it is so relaxed and unpolished - enough that the producer credit is "?nknown". They do some traditional material, some old songs, and a few new ones written by Mathus as if they were old. Some short instrumentals, several choices that touch on slightly prickly race themes (Can You Blame the Colored Man, Turnip Greens, B-L-A-C-K). Reminds me of the Band in a couple places.
A buncha guys having a good time playing some tunes with each other, and it shows.
