We wanted to play the blues, so we got some stuff we recorded that's almost a blues and it's almost a waltz - which I think would be nice for y'all to learn about... Don't ever say "I can't do something because I don't have this..." I learned to play fiddle on a cigar box - Canray Fontenot

"Left Alone Blues" by Ishmon Bracey

Howdy, y'all!

My very first post!  :)  The other day, I just felt like recording something, but I had nothing to record, so I decided to whip up a version of Bracey's Left Alone Blues (Bracey's original is one of the coolest songs in the history of the world IMHO!!). I made no attempt to figure out IB's guitar and just guessed the chords. The guitar fills are nothing earth-shattering, plus the sound quality leaves a bit to be desired. But whatever, it was fun recording it!  :D

Cheers, folks!

Love it.  The honky-tonky feel really works for me.  Hank Bracey!

I did my own scratchy recording of this tune eighty-four bazillion years ago:

12-string in open G, capo'd somewhere and with overdubbed harp.

You're right - this is one of the all-time great recordings.

Rob - welcome to Weenie Campbell.  I really like your version. The vocals have a kind of ethereal quality, which is mirrored by the 12-string.

Yeah, like 'em both, two different takes on a great song. Welcome gents! Sounds great.

Rob - welcome to Weenie Campbell.

Thanks - I've actually been around these parts (or the periphery thereof) for years and years - just haven't been very active.  Must change that.

Steve and Rob - you have done some fine work on a great song! I enjoyed both versions, but gotta say that Steve's countrified version was pretty cool. Whodda thunk Ishmon could have been a crossover artist?

Thanks for the friendly welcome, everyone! Like Rob, I've lurked hereabouts for some time but haven't posted. And like Rob again (!), I really ought to change that.  :D

Rob, I really liked your version of LAB. Love that harp! The jangly 12-string kinda gives it that classic Bracey guitar/mandolin combo sound, too. Also, I agree with Parlor Picker: your singing is superb.

My version was kinda thrown together fast. I only get the chance to record when my wife takes our daughters out of the house for a few hours ... so time-pressure is always a factor!! Not sure why it came out "countrified". Wasn't really my intention ... it just came out that way! To my ears, it seemed appropriate to slap some 1950's-style echo on the vocals.   :)

Yeah a very nice recording, well done. I know it is an old thread but I have only visited maybe 3 per cent of all the threads on Back Porch which is my favorite sub - forum on Weenie so I will be bringing quite a few back.
