Son House's later residence in Detroit
« on: September 29, 2021, 07:23:03 AM »
From http://jeffdroke.com/sonHOUSE.htm, it is stated that House "spent his final years living sedately in an apartment at 14201 Second Street in the Highland Park neighborhood of Detroit."

I got curious, and decided to search up the address on Google, and this is what I came up with:

https://www.apartments.com/gabrielle-apartments-highland-park-mi/4rmsjsh/

The brown, big building is where House would have stayed, as from https://www.rochestercitynewspaper.com/rochester/seeking-son-house/Content?oid=2128424, the writer stated that they had to "squeeze in a crowded elevator" up to the fifth floor to see Son House in 1981.

Here is the area on Google Maps: https://www.google.com/maps/place/14201+2nd+Ave,+Highland+Park,+MI+48203/@42.4069231,-83.1023161,3a,75y,242.25h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1skF4NTCquzNNf5fU0-ajOCA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!4m5!3m4!1s0x8824cdc19d0d1589:0x9680acc134a4bddb!8m2!3d42.40659!4d-83.1031911

Very interesting piece of information, if I may add. The area looks really well-kept and taken care of too.

What a great article...one never knows what they will find when the begin a search for something or someone.  Thanks for sharing-the apartment location is also very interesting to know.

I read quite a few years back that Son was buried in a Detroit cemetary. I then read where he and Evie moved there to be closer to her daughter.
My son was attending Wayne State University in Detroit at the time, so my next trip to Detroit had us in a quiet neighborhood cemetary spending a few hours with the one and only Son House.
