Title: Johnson, Miller & Dermody--"Deceiving Blues"--New CD
Post by: Johnm on March 03, 2006, 08:43:28 AM
Hi all,
I just wanted to let you know that Orville Johnson, Grant Dermody and I took delivery on our new CD, "Deceiving Blues", the day before yesterday, and we're excited about it.  In the course of the program, Orville gets to shine on mandolin, dobro and rubboard, Grant handles the harmonica, and I hold down the guitar.  We all sing.  The program includes songs from such musicians as  Blind Willie Johnson, Teddy Darby, Charlie Patton, Rev. Davis, Dr. Ross and others.  We should have the CD placed with www.CDBaby.com in a couple of weeks, but if anyone wants it sooner, you can send me a message from the site.
All best,
Johnm

Hey John,

Looks like I get to be the first on Weenie Campbell to congratulate you, Orville and Grant on this new offering. I look forward to picking it up from you when you travel down this way. I'm sure it's great music from all quarters and I'm so glad Orville has recovered and is making music.

All for now.
John C.

Thanks for the good words, John C. and Uncle Bud, and it is great to see the extent of Orville's recovery.  He really looks 10-15 years younger.  Now to figure out how to achieve that effect without having an angioplasty performed and stent inserted!  We're pleased how things turned out, all recording in the same room, no headphones, sitting in a circle.
All best,
Johnm

Yes, congratulations Johnm!  Very cool that you guys are doing some country blues based ercording.

I see that you guys are playing together on March 11 for the Seattle Folklore Society!

Ditto being there for the folklore society concert. That would be a real treat.

I am always glad to hear about occasions when good things happen to good people I know, for a change.  ;)   It seems so often to be bad things, to good people, if you know what I mean.

Best to you, Orville , and Grant,
Miller

Sounds like another winner!

I have always enjoyed Orville's vocal rendering of "Mother Earth." Even without his soaring voice, that's just a great tune. From my very first listen, I have thought the lyrics were powerful. Memphis Slim always seemed like a cheery guy, but interview with on "Blues in the Mississippi Night" provided some insights into how tough it really was.

Hello John
I'm very impatient about listening (and ordering) your new CD
I tried on CD Baby but didn't find it
Will it be available within the next few days ? or may be I'm less familiar with this website research that I am with your music ?

So long

Yves

Thanks very much for posting the link, Pan.  I am about half a step above computer-illiterate, and I didn't know how to do that, though I've been told before.  Thanks!
All best,
Johnm

Just clicked the link: clicked the tunes: Depot Blues and Bulldoze Blues are simply great. I will look forward to buying this CD.

John, I really like the smooth single string walkup you (?) do in Depot Blues. And the clean playing,  intro into Bulldoze. It isn't rushed, right in the groove. The tempo for Bulldoze is a bit slower than I have played it lately on mando, and I like it, it fits the laconic, lazy, easy Texas Summer Heat sipping iced tea kind of tempo Henry Thomas evokes. Grant's harp sounds great. Is that him singing Depot?

You guys must be having a good time playing these old tunes, n'est-ce pas? Sounds like it...  ;)

Thanks for the good words, Miller.  That is Grant singing on "Depot Blues".  I will go back in this thread to the post where I listed the program and edit it to show who sings lead on the different songs.  Thanks to everyone for your interest and support.
All best,
Johnm

I've been listening to the CD for a couple of weeks now.  Generally I prefer the more uptempo tracks, but thats just my personal taste.

I really don't know much about Orville Johnson- but there is some really sweet sounding reso.  What fantastic tone and vibrato he gets!

John- I've not heard you push the vocal like you do on Stewball before- it sounds great.  Bulldoze is great too- and brings back happy memories of a weekend in Bracknell.

I'm enjoying the CD a lot and highly recommend it to anyone with Weenieish tastes.

Thanks for the good words, Simon and Stuart.  I figured out that way of doing "Stewball" when I was about 19.  That's getting to be a while ago!
All best,
Johnm
