Title: Gypsy Blues
Post by: frankie on April 10, 2004, 04:36:38 PM
Managed to record this quickly before starting bath.  It's actually Furry Lewis' Black Gypsy Blues.  I can get into the reasons I changed the lyrics later if anybody's interested...  most things about it are pretty rough - if you have the courage to d/l, you'll get your USRDA of vitamin C (clam), I promise.  The vocal just started coming together yesterday.  I'm trying to be fluid about the form of the song, but I feel like I'm pretty stiff sounding, overall.  I guess it'll get better if I keep playing it for the next two or three, six or seven...  years!

Just hope you didn;t get your guitar wet.   :P

Sounds terrific Frank, you are right - the few rough edges (very few in my book) will be taken care of by continuing to play it.  I'll have to go back and listen to the orginal to know what you mean about the word changes, anyway nice job! (always interesting to hear these pieces done with much improved audio - even at 22 or 32K smapling rate).

cheers,

Listening back, most of the lyric changes were largely unintentional (doh!) except for the title and first line of the opening verse.

I gotta say...  these seasonal bunny emoticons are pretty scary.  Especially the afro-bunny!

Fluid is certainly the key word with Furry, isn't it. He's so damn fluid you need a mop. Makes figuring stuff out a lot trickier than it initially sounds, IMO. This is one of his trickier tunes and you've certainly got it.

Now I must try out one of the bunnies:  8)

Thanks - I think I've got bits of it...? I had a lot of trouble getting the vocal to work with that figure at the 12th fret.? It's still formulaic sounding to me and I had to simplify it just to get the feeling of being able to sing with it.? Now I have to start really playing it...

Just listening to Good Looking Girl Blues (I swiped a couple of ideas from it for the break), and that's got a lot of interesting stuff happening underneath the vocal, as does Rock Island Blues.? I think Rock Island Blues has a cooler break (JohnM totally nails this in his video, btw), but I wanted to try my own hand at working out something 'hirsute' (Furry...? hirsute...? yuk yuk...) without quoting him directly.? I need to expand that notion a little further, I think.

Now I must try out one of the bunnies:? 8)

Man...? those things are like LSD inspired cyber Peeps from hell!

I like the opening verse of Furry's Blues, another tune in this family:

I believe I'll buy me a graveyard of my own
Believe I'll buy me a graveyard of my own
I'm gonna kill everybody that have done me wrong

!!

I think those evil Peeps are getting to you, my man... <g>

I like that verse, too...  Furry's sensitive side...

I think this is your best one, sounds like it falls more in your vocal range. You sound so O0 on this one ! The picking is excelent also.
I'd say you got this one bout' nailed.

Thanks, Eddie - glad you liked it.  Since I recorded it, I've been working on and off on slowing it down a bit and incorporating some of the verses from his other tunes that fit that same basic structure (as long as there's some sort of thematic overlap).  I'd also like to work the break from Rock Island Blues into it...  what a great break!

All that's gonna have to wait until I get a couple more tunes out of my system first, though...
