John Fahey and Buddy Boy Hawkins
« on: April 05, 2016, 12:45:08 PM »
I have read that John copied parts of  Buddy Boy's " A Rag " for his piece "Lion".
It seems to be mostly the last part of A Rag copied for the first part of Lion.
Is there anywhere I can find tab or hints for any of these pieces?

I don't know if TAB for "A Rag" is available. Anyone?

Well thanks,
I tried it some, does not really get it to sound like neither Fahey or Hawkins.
Perhaps need a bit of practice
Have you tried ? or anyone ?
What do you think? Is it a good tab ? For Hawkins?

Hi Bengt:

I like the songs, but was never motivated to play them, so I can't comment on the accuracy of the TAB. From what I understand, some of the TABs posted to the JF site are spot on while others are approximations or personal interpretations--or just inaccurate.

Fahey took a lot of his inspiration from CB songs, and some of his songs--or parts thereof--are closer to the originals than others. You can take the original songs as the benchmark and the info found in  the TAB as a guide.

There's a performance video on YT that may help be helpful:

Practice might help. The daily struggle is ongoing...

Thanks again,
I will try harder...
Perhaps there is someone on YT playing "A Rag" also?(Not Buddy Boy though)

I've got an unreleased studio recording of it that I recorded back in the 1980s if that will help you any.

It would be interesting.
What do you say about the similarities between Lion and A rag?

Fahey steals the highlight "flamenco" part from A Rag (as does Canned Heat on Shake It and Break It) then proceeds to do his own thing.
