And for those who might not be familiar with this song or James Lowry, it is on the excellent Virginia Traditions: Western Piedmont Blues compilation and available for requesting on the Juke.

Hi There again, it's been a while since the last post...12 years!
Now I'm trying to get James Lowry lyrics from "Tampa Blues"

Also I been trying to play it and it seems to be tuned in some kind of open G, cause the low D is present when he goes to the 5th. But the high E seems to remain untouched so to me sounds like a hybrid tuning. I have to keep investigating though.

Can you help me? I think I got most of it.........except a couple of lines. This is what I got:

Tampa Blues (James Lowry)

Said I'm goin', yes I'm goin'...& your cryin' won't make me stay
Said the more that you worry, the further you drive me away
I done bought my ticket, tell you what I believe I'll do
Beat on/old Tampa & settle down.

Say listen conductor, can I ride the blinds
Said the conductor say, don't you know this train ain't mine?
You done bought your ticket son, I'll tell you what's better (to) do
Beat on that tampa & get down

Hey pretty mama, can I get a job with you...
(...this one is pretty hard to understand for me....)
I done bought my ticket, I tell what I believe I'll do
Beat on tampa & settle down

Don't take no woman that wanna be your friend
Cause she'll leave/lead you to the jailhouse "???" to the pen
She will buy her ticket, tell you what she will do
Beat on that tampa & make a fool of you

Settle down, settle down, settle down...

HERE's THE LINK TO THE SONG:

THANKS!

Hi,
You might check "Tampa Blues" by Skoodle Dum Doo and Sheffield to see what lyrics they sang when they did the same song. It sounds like he's playing in A in standard tuning and also sounds like a duet. I don't see how he maintains a regular alternating bass while playing those syncopated counterlines on the fourth string.

That mystery line could start with;

Says, brown lil' girl

Maybe he just mumbles/misspeaks a bit in that line.

Love your LP "Home Recordings". Is there a new release in the pipeline?

Yeah, thanks Johnm I checked the other Tampa Blues from Skoodle Dum Do & Sheffiel but they don't sing that part.
I am learning how to play it, I believe it's only one guitar in open G tuning except the High E.  I am working on it and if I finally have a decent version I'll upload it and post it.

"Says brown lil' girl don't work on" sounds pretty accurate...!   Very good ear sir!!!

I am not producing any records right now but I been uploading some videos, some are with my good friend "Washboard Quico", check out my youtube channel!

I've been a long time YouTube subcriber since the "Cold Hearted Woman Blues" video I think. Haunting stuff.

Couple things on Tampa:

2.3 ...I'LL TELL YOU WHAT YOU BETTER DO

4.2 ...LEAD you to the jailhouse, FROM THERE to the pen
