Del played tougher than a boiled owl, and I still pity the fool what's got to follow her on to the stage. She sang prettier than many a woman with a guitar known primarily for their voice. Her original instrumental, Wobbly Walk, inspired by chapters 16-18 (Debbs and Socialism) of Howard Zinn's classic People's History of the United States is a hoot and conjures up a Chaplanesque Bo of old, IWW card fresh in hand, struttin' his stuff - Mr O'Muck review, Opera House gig somewhere off the mainland, Maine, USA
Afternoon, all. I'm interested in meeting other country blues enthusiasts in the Austin area, but haven't had much luck so far. We do have an Austin Blues Society, which hosts an open-mic every Monday night. I went this week, and like I expected, listened to 3 hours of guys playing B.B. King and SRV covers (nothing wrong with that, just not my thing). Pinetop Perkins made a surprise visit and played a few songs, which made the night worth it to me.
Can anyone refer me to any clubs/meetups/playing circles/etc, etc? I sure would appreciate it.
Good luck finding a group to meet up with. I'm in Fort Worth. Wish I was a little closer, and I'd meet up with you. There's nothing up here is North TX that I'm aware of. I was going to a playing circle. Heard a lot of Eagles covers, and that sort of thing. I did my thing, and everyone really seemed to enjoy it. However, the bar that hosted the circle shut down, and nobody else has picked it up.

Maybe we should start one Cody. I'm in 78704, where are you situated?
Some off the top of my head observations about the Austin scene compared to other places:
1. There are a lot of great musicians in this town and most of the ones who are any good are gigging. I count myself as pretty good and have no interest in gigging as a career because I have a good, albeit draining, job which I love almost as much as playing music. I do play at a lot of parties etc. and have an expanding circle of musical friends. However I'm still looking for a regular combo type deal.
2. Country blues is a minority sport in Austin. So be it, when everyone else is playing the same old country / singersongwriter stuff when I play I have a different sound that rounds out the genres. Most people seem to like the variation. I'm sure a small minority absolutely hate it, but they never say anything!
Please hit me up with a PM if you'd like to get together for a social, could be a lot of fun.
Mark.
