Well, I ain't got no voice, but I'll give you the words of an old Memphis song.' William Brown began to sing in his sweet true country voice, poking in delicate passages at every pause, like the guitar was a second voice commenting with feeling on the ironic words of the blues... This was the real blues... The blues in print give you the skeleton only. If you've never heard the blues, get yourself a record and listen and then come back and join us... William Brown's song can last until the morning... - Alan Lomax, The Land Where the Blues Began

I found out that Bob Guida passed away last night, packing up from a gig.

He got two wings.  RIP, Bob.

Sad news indeed.  But that video is a fine memorial.  Thanks for posting it.

Terrible news. Bob was a very nice fellow and a very good singer.

That's very sad news indeed. Let's Go to Hunting, the Return of the Otis Brothers has been a favorite of mine since I got it. Condolences to Bob's family and all of his friends.

There's a one hour interview with Bob Guida and Pat Conte here:
http://www.downhomeradioshow.com/2008/02/interview-with-the-otis-brothers/

At the same site, a live Otis Brothers concert from Banjo Jim's:

I never got to meet Bob, but he sure seems like a guy with a good sense of humour, judging from the above recordings.

"I'd just like to thank whoever left this guitar in the garbage for Pat to find." - Bob Guida, tuning Pat Conte's guitar at Banjo Jim's

This is terrible news.  I never got to meet Bob either but I have admired the Otis Brothers for more years than I can remember.

This is a shock!  Condolences to Bob's family.
I met Bob hanging out w/ the Retrofret crew, of which he was a part.  He could light up a room!  And half the fun of going to a guitar show was to see which 'under a $100 guitar' Bob would buy at the show, and then belt out blues songs on it the entire weekend, with his powerful voice heard even above the din of the electric wankers..what a blast!
He had a great love of the music, and will be missed..Tom

I never met Bob but very much enjoyed the music he and Pat Conte made together.  My condolences to his family and friends.
All best,

This was posted on http://steelbrassnwood.livejournal.com/179732.html

Quote
Bob Guida, the great blues guitarist and singer, a jovial and powerful presence in the Brooklyn music scene for decades, died last night. Shlomo Pestcoe posted the following announcement to the NY bluegrass and old-time list:

As some of you may have heard, Bob Guida passed away yesterday, Wednesday, March 11th. Bob had a heart attack as he was setting up his equipment to do a performance at a local library.

As per the Guida family's wishes, Bob's funeral and wake this weekend will be a small private familial function. Of course, there will be a larger memorial sometime in the near future. However, it's too early to discuss or organize such an event. Please understand that everyone is still very much in a state of shock and distraught over Bob's sudden passing.

Jim Garber and I are planning to set up a memorial site for Bob on Facebook asap. We'll let folks know when it's up.

All of our love and best wishes go out to Phylis Guida (Bob's widow) and the Guida family in their tragic loss.

Rest in peace, Bob. You are sorely missed by your many friends and loved ones.

"Bob loved performing and making people happy with his wonderful music and singing," Shlomo said in a Facebook posting. "It was Bob's fondest wish that when his time came, he would be able to take his leave of this world while on stage. And yesterday his wish was granted. He will be sorely missed."

My husband, son and I were saddened by Bob Guida's passing.  I've never met him but the stories my husband Bob told me I would have loved to.  I want to send our sincerest sympathies to his wife and family.  God Bless them all.

Just heard about this.  Sad news, I last saw the Otis Bros. a couple months ago, a rare electric set.  RIP.
