Folklore is not as easy to collect as it sounds. The best source is where there are the least outside influences, and these people, being usually under-privileged, are the shyest... The Negro, in spite of his open-faced laughter, his seeming acquiescence, is particularly evasive... The Indian resists curiosity by a stony silence. The Negro offers a feather-bed resistance - Zora Neale Hurston, Mules and Men (1935)

|-------------0--1--2-----------2----------2--1--2------------2---------2---|
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

|------2---2--------5----5--2--2--2--2--2----2-2------5--3--5--3--3------|

|---0------0--0--0--------------0-----0---------0---2-----2-----2-----2---|
|-------------------------------------------0----0---0-----------0---------|
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|

|---------0--0--0-----1------0---------|
|---------3--3--3-----3---3--3-----3---|
|---------0--0--0-----0------------2---|

If you're talking about the last measures of the intro where Tommy is concluding his "mmmmmm" phrase and playing the D chord, to me it sounds like he's playing a repeating figure where he is quickly sliding into the D shape (brushing upwards with his index finger, almost snapping the high E string) and following it with a thumb-index-thumb roll (with the thumb brushing two strings simultaneously on the final triplet), something like this:

slide:
-1-/-2------------------------
-2-/-3------------------------
-1-/-2--------0---0-----------
------------------0-----------
----------0-------------------
------------------------------ and repeat

maybe that...

-----------2--2--2-----------2--2--2---
------3----3--3--3-----3-----3--3--3---
--------------2------------------2------
------0-------0---------0--------0------
---0-----------------0------------------
----------------------------------------

thank you for your response bighollowtwang, now i'm sure that's a D chord... ;D
