Seattle's Eclectic Busker Baby Gramps In SF Concert Saturday November 24

Seattle's eclectic acoustic troubadour Baby Gramps will appear in concert on Saturday November 24 at The Darkroom, 2263 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA, 94110, (415) 401-7987. Also appearing will be San Francisco jug band Emily Anne's Hot Nutz. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are $10 at the door.

Critics and fans love the carnie antics of Baby Gramps, a musical dynamo with long flowing beard and a raspy voice. He has appeared on the David Letterman Show singing pirate songs from his recent album featuring Johnny Depp and others, and is a favorite performer at counterculture events like the Oregon Country Fair, Bumbershoot and the Bonnaroo festival.

Here's what Glenn Howard of the American Musical Heritage Foundation writes about Gramps and his music:

"Baby Gramps is an amazing amalgamation of everything that anybody's ever heard including Mississippi John Hurt, Uncle Dave Macon, Charlie Patton, Blind Blake, Captain Beefheart, the Tuvan Throat Singers and Popeye. Baby Gramps has created a highly developed and completely original musical concoction that is easily the most intriguing synthesis to come out of the roots revival of the late 20th Century."

"He plays beautifully "betwixt the cracks in the piano" a la Ornette Coleman, can scat the blues three notes at once, and has invented his own guitar technique he calls "scribbling". Gramps does amazing tricks with timing, timbre, tempo and pitch that no one can hope to imitate, and reinvents himself nightly, never performing a song the same way twice."

Support performers Emily Anne's Hot Nutz features the lithe, lovely vocalist with a beautiful Twenties radio vocalist delivery and her red-hot jug band featuring drummer Pete Devine, bassist Kennan O'Brien, guitarist Victor Wong and trombonist Larry Leight. San Francisco has become a nexus of the next wave of jug band excitement and Emily Anne's Hot Nutz is right on the cutting edge of the city's return-to-roots music craze.
