The famous Mother of the Blues doesn't want you to ever forget her-that's how much she loves her friends! So we put her picture on her latest record, 'Dream Blues.' On the other side is 'Lost Wandering Blues' by 'Ma.' Accompaniments by Pruitt Twins on those guitars that made Kansas City famous.... This is the first time, to our knowledge, that any artist's picture has ever appeared on a record. Paramount is always first with the features - Chicago Defender ad, 7 June 1924 for Ma Rainey's souvenir record

Steve James might be interested.  Furry was his good buddy.

I thought you didn't play, Alan.  Are you a closet guitar picker after all?

As suggested, I have tipped off Steve James.

I was performing a Google search on Lewis and one of the results was from eBay. I usually ignore those but thinking it might be a record in my possession, and eager to know what silly sums might be involved, I followed it through and that's what I found. Knowing there'd be more interest here than with me I did my civic duty and passed it on.:)
Only instrument I play is a good old fashioned turntable. :o

Thanks, Bunk. Seems Andy Cohen showed a little interest on the PWBL, eh?
All for now.

I mentioned it to Steve James, who confirmed he spent some time with Furry.  However, he never saw him with a Gibson and is - to put it mildly - sceptical about this provenance.

Ah,yes - sounds like my son.  He's a scratch DJ.  Guess you'll be into hip-hop and all that "gold chains, no brains and profanity" music as well as downhome blues then.

OK - don't dignify me with a response, Alan.

just Google "Furry Lewis Gibson" and you'll see that he did in fact play one, according to various sources.  Although it is curious that the only picture I saw was of Bukka White playing Furry's Gibson!

'Course, that doesn't mean that this is actually that same guitar...

Don't possess gold chains, but I'm told "no brains and profanity" are my forte. ::) But we digress...on to more serious matters, eh?

Norlin era J50, could be good, could be a dog. I had one and wrecked it experimenting with heavy strings (otherwise known as the "let's see what this baby can really do" syndrome). Donated it to a luthier in exchange for some work on other instruments.

Howdy:

The one one the album covers and the one on ebay is, I think, a Gibson B-25N or an LG-3 (I suspect the former). The waist appears narrower than a J-50.

I have a vague recollection that this item was offered on eBay or elsewhere several years ago.  Whether an instrument is that owned or played by a particular musician need to be left completely to speculation.  There was an article in an issue of Vintage Guitarfrom about 3 years ago in which the author positively identified an instrument as Charlie Christian's based on a comparion of the grain of the wood as shown in photos of Charlie and an instrument that the author had acquired.

You're dead right Alex. I looked it up in Gibson fab. flattop guitars book and there's a pic on page 98 of Furry playing it, caption is "Memphis blues star Furry Lewis and his B-25".

The Gibson logo on Stefan's photos, which according to the book dates it as mid to late 60s, has disappeared from the pickguard in this photo. Further info from the book, the LG-2 became the B-25 in 1962 after 20 years in production, and the LG-3 became the B-25N in 1963. You learn something new every day.  ;)
