Mike Seeger once told a beginning fiddler, "A fiddle is like a dog; it can sense fear."

:)

One for the quote oracle.

UB, I do believe it's allready there. I saw it the other day, and only thought later by whom it was.

Cheers

Thank you, Lyle, for the useful info. Do you have some picture, or even better, youtube clip, of that "mute" thing, to see how it works or get an idea of its volume. Thanks!

Here's one example:

I have a mute somewhere around here, but I've only used it once (when I learned fiddle, I no longer lived in an apartment), but I remember it as muting the sound much more than in this video clip. Then again, my mute clamped over the bridge rather than just sliding up to it.

Here's something more like what I was thinking of: a practice mute ---

I use a metal mute on my fiddle. Works wonders for a banjo as well! :-P

A couple of clothespins, one on either side of the bridge (sticking out over the top of the fiddle) will also do quite well.  But they don't mute the sound as thoroughly as the big metal mute.
BUT the other thing is, the fiddle will react quite differently with a mute on -- the response of the strings to the bow will be different.  You really need to get over the fear of a bad noise (inevitable when playing fiddle, even for seasoned players!) and it helps a lot to be in a place where nobody else can hear (woodshed, closet, basement).

Good point about a mute affecting the effect of the bow, Cleoma.  I should have said something about that, particularly since I'd earlier written about the importance of expression in bowing. I think maybe that's one reason I never used a mute again, after trying it only once.

Give my regards to Joseph Falcon.
