Hi all,
A singer I've really been enjoying recently, from listening to the JSP "Detroit Blues" set is Sampson Pittman, who has several cuts on the first disc of that 4-disc set.  He had a slightly husky voice, and a sort of confiding quality to his vocal delivery, a bit like Lightnin' Hopkins had at times, though his voice and phrasing were nothing like Lightnin's.  One nice thing about the set is that for most of Pittman's performances, a separate track is included in which he explains when and how he came to write the song.  He sounds like he may have been an older man when he was recorded.  One of his tracks, and my favorite of his, "I've Been Down In The Circle Before", can be heard in the "Miller's Breakdown" thread, at https://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=10188.msg92465#msg92465 .

Larry Johnson's vocals on the two albums I have of his make it a pleasure to listen to both albums back to back and still be paying attention at the end and wanting more. I could also mention the guitar playing, subtle rearranging and nicely broken time going on.

I'm thankful to have met him at a PT workshop that one time. Larry was extremely talented and a bit of a savant. It's taken me many years to realize it.

I just thought a singer this morning whom I've always thought had a wonderful voice, bright and clear like a horn--Washboard Sam.

For some reason I've been listening to Smith Casey lately, funny how some performers float up to the surface occasionally. I really like his "Shorty George."

Hard to describe his voice, but it sounds like it's coming from somewhere way up there behind the sinuses.

Washboard Sam had some stomping backup as well.  Here's a favorite of mine with Big Bill on Guitar and Arnett Nelson -aka King Mutt - on clarinet, Unknown (Black Bob?) on piano. Great lyrics too.

I'm sure I'll be echoing some others' tastes, but would mention Texas Alexander, Tommy Johnson and Sam Collins as standouts for me. Also very fond of Water Vinson and Yank Rachell's voices.
