John Cephas lyrics
« on: November 06, 2016, 07:45:43 AM »
Howdy,
anybody who can complete my lyrics search?
Cephas & Wiggins song : Catfish Blues

CATFISH BLUES ? CEPHAS & WIGGINS

You know I ?d rather be a catfish
If I could swim there down in the sea
I would have some   ? somebody
Setting out a hook for me
Setting out a hook for me

You know I went to my baby?s house
She told me sit down on the stair
Men can come right on ..
?.
?.

You know I have my, have my baby
And I sat down by her bed
Turn on your feeder(?)
Let it turn red, cherry red
They turn red, cherry red

That?s why I?d rather be a little catfish
So I could swim away down in the sea
I would have some   ? somebody
Setting out a hook for me
Setting out a hook for me

You know I went to the church
And they call?d on me to pray
I got down on my knees
Not a word to say
Not a word to say

You know I don?t want to be a ?
And I don?t want to be a ..
If I cannot be a catfish
I won?t swim at all
I won?t swim at all

That?s why I?d rather be a little catfish
So I could swim away down in the sea
I would have some  pretty women
Setting out a hook for me
Setting out a hook for me

Embee, I think these are your missing lyrics;

Man, you can come right on in you know my husband just now left

Turn on your heater til it turns cherry red

You know I don't want to be a tadpole
And I don't want to be a frog

thanks, makes sence.
First verse is still a mystery to me though ..

You know I ?d rather be a catfish
If I could swim there down in the sea
I would have some   ? somebody
Setting out a hook for me
Setting out a hook for me

You have the words of the first verse essentially correct. Do you mean you don't know what he is trying to say?
I think he is saying that he wishes people (women) would want to catch him, like they do a catfish.
Try listening to some other versions of the song, like Muddy Waters, who sings something like "I'd have all you good lookin' women fishing after me"

Thank you ... I understand the lyrics but was missing that one word on line 3 of verse 1 ... but he sings twice "somebody" ...

And yes I know more versions of this great song, but Cephas' is my favorite :)

Thanks for helping me out with the lyrics.

About playin' this song, I think this is played in D minor open tuning.
I'm strugglin' with the chords/tabs on each 2nd and 3rd line of every verse,
and esp the "coming down" on the last words of these lines...
If I could swim there down in the sea

Thanks for any help!
