Good to know that there is fairly conclusive evidence for discovering a picture of Willie Brown. This is good stuff and long overdue. Good work digging this up Randy. Discoveries like this show that there are more gems out there for those who don't mind digging. Awesome!

I know here we all love the vast array of the prewar artists, not just who is popular with the media. The discovery that Meadows and Wardlow got published showing us the face of Willie Brown came with little fanfare. Now if there had been a vague darkening that kind of 'sort of' resembled the image of Robert Johnson's face appeared on someones toast the board would come alive with activity. Someone in the media would honestly ask if his "deal at the crossroads" caused him to haunt a toaster and make his face appear on a piece of bread.

I had a conversation with Stephen Calt years ago about the different pictures we have of the blues singers. While he admitted to being a proponent of the two commonly accepted photos of Robert Johnson that he was heavily doubting if they could be proven. Say what you want about Calty but he was a true scholar of the craft. I remember Mack McCormick even casting shade on the Johnson photos ( and not the new ones). Provenance becomes more and more fleeting as we the decades go by, doesn't mean we can't give a 'reasonable acceptance' in lue of complete verification. That verification opportunity was likely lost decades ago for most of these fellas.

Many people who knew RJ saw his pics in the 1980s & early 1990s & said it was him. This Willie Brown situation is quite different.

Son House didn't recognize the picture of RJ as the little Robert that he and Willie knew. Then again he claimed to be almost 100 years old then.
