Memphis Minnie on Woman's Hour
« on: December 16, 2008, 04:26:42 AM »
Good article on Memphis Minnie on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour today. Features interviews with the folks at Document Records and Maria Muldaur.

You can listen on the iPlayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00g25ly.

You can either listen to the "does short hair mean you're off sex" article first :o... or fast-forward to about 24 minutes through.

Yeah nice one. I guess they also heavily relied upon the Garon work for info.

I gave up on the Radio Times years ago so would have missed this, thanks for the heads up.

Have to admit I fast forwarded through the "short hair".

But the good old Radio Times is full of lots of useful (and even more useless) information!

I would listen, but it sounds like it might be a bit sexist to me...

Does that link still work for anyone? I tried it before the holidays and got a playback error, then tried it again today and got an error that the show is "unavailable at this time." It sounded cool so I'm sad if I missed it.

Damn they've removed it. I wish I'd downloaded it now.

Probably not the same thing, but I have tape of a BBC radio prog about MM which must be 20 years old, could that be the same one?

Not a chance.  The show originally pointed to by this thread interviewed the Atkinsons, current owners of Document Records, among others.

Damn they've removed it. I wish I'd downloaded it now.

I didn't think you could download the BBC "Hear it again" type content, only listen to it.  What do you know that I don't, Alan?  (A lot, I realise, but I mean in this particular context.)

You are absolutely correct, I've just tried an unrelated "hear it again" and no such method that I can fathom. Shame they don't keep them available for longer periods.

A bit Heath-Robinson, but I have heard of people disconnecting their speakers and running the signal into a tape recorder.  Too much trouble, if you ask me.

Thanks to a resourceful friend of mine, who not only recorded but also digitized the program, I now have the Memphis Minnie section of it as a 13MB mp3.

Anybody wishing to have this send me a PM giving an email to which I can attach the file. (zipping only reduces it by 0.5MB!)
