Happy Birthday John Smith Hurt! I thank you for the music.

I'd like to dedicate this year's party on "The Back Porch" to Art Browning who sadly passed away this year (18th Aug 2013 R.I.P.).

I met Art only once, the brief occasion of my visit to MJH's home place on a September, Saturday afternoon in Mississippi in 2012 but he has left an indelible mark on me for the rest of my days. That afternoon his generosity and grace were inspirational. He silently and patiently listened to my learner renditions of MJH tunes played on his guitar and kept encouraging me to play another. When he should have been heading home not only did he spend nearly 2 hours walking me around MJH's home explaining fantastic detail such as how MJH made a brace for the leg of his chair with a tobacco tin (see pic attached) but then insisted on taking me personally to see The Valley Store when I asked for directions (see pic attached). I was lucky to have had that time with him and I feel his loss despite such a brief encounter.

So let's get this party rolling then! This year I have, for your delectation 14 MJH tune's from which you may choose to partake in. I have played the 14 tunes as taught by John Miller on his most excellent DVD's "The Guitar of MJH" Volume One & Volume Two. The recording is done live straight through and the stumbles remain where they fell. It was great fun to do and I am delighted to have reached this milestone. (It has taken " a while" to  get myself to complete this project and play all 14!).This is a link to my You Tube Channel so hopefully you might drop in and listen to a tune for the day that is in it.

Thank you Weenie Campbell!!

Very nice, all of you!

Now brace yourselves for a precipitous decline in both musical ability and sartorial flair...

Great ! Loved it all so far, especially Colm's olympic effort.
I'm loving playing Monday Morning Blues these days, so here it is :

Bless him, Mississippi John Hurt, without a doubt the man who did most to lead me kindly to this music.

Hi all,
I'm kind of late to the party because I was out of town and off the internet on John Hurt's birthday, but thanks to all who posted performances to celebrate his birthday.  It's really nice to see and hear the personal touches that everyone injected into his or her performances, people's different touches on the guitar, feel for rhythm and vocal phrasing.  That's an awful lot of songs to have ready to go on one day of recording, too, Colm, and I'm sure that represents a big investment in time and effort, none of which, I suspect, you regret.  Well done, one and all!
All best,
Johnm

Yes, nice jobs folks, and good to see some infrequent posters jump in.

Colm, I think your shirt and tie scared your furniture away.

Don't think the RGD one happened- perhaps because there are fewer people on here who can competently play his stuff (I certainly can't).

There was a McTell one and a Patton one in the distant past though.

Nice to see some new faces - thanks to joe paul and jtbrown, nice renditions enjoyed them a lot!  Colm I promised to come back and let you know my favourite.  It has to be "You Got To Walk That Lonesome Valley" I like the little bit of storytelling at the start - you must have been watching the Rainbow Quest (he was amazing on that wasn't he!).  Which song are you most happy with?  Of course always good to hear Simon, well done all :)
Gary Davis sure is more intimidating but I have to give that a go. Just over 6 weeks to get something together - good luck!
