Devil At The Confluence, The Pre-war blues of St Louis, Missouri
« on: September 14, 2009, 09:30:30 PM »
From Delmark Records' Myspace page:

Devil At The Confluence, The Pre-war blues of St Louis, Missouri.
By St Louis artist Kevin Belford and Virginia Publishing and including an exclusive CD from
Delmark Records of the recordings of the St Louis Blues music Legends.

Devil At The Confluence represents the first comprehensive book ever
published on the history of the blues music of St. Louis. More than a
beautiful coffee-table book, the original illustrations, vintage advertising
and rare photographs detail the chronological story of what the St. Louis blues are,
who the St. Louis blues musicians were, and how their careers began in St. Louis.

Included with the book is a special compact disc of recordings by
St Louis legends produced by Bob Koester, the founder of Delmark Records.
Artists surveyed on the CD include such early bluesmasters as
Barrelhouse Buck, Speckled Red, Roosevelt Sykes, St Louis Jimmy,
Big Joe Williams, Mary Johnson and many more.

The old Yazoo lp St. Louis Town with Peetie Wheetstraw on the cover is also great.  I love the St. Louis guitar sound e.g. Henry Townsend and Charley Jordan.

I was just wandering around the Innernet this morning, trying to avoid what I should've been doing, when I came across this blog for the first time. Obviously it has already been discovered by other Weenies.

But I did see this one entry that no one else has commented on, so I'll give y'all the link. The topic is Frankie Baker, the Frankie of Frankie and Johnny or Frankie and Albert fame:

This is a blog, so buyer beware. The author does seem to have some cred, but I'm in the dark about him, apologies if I should know better. And the other blog posts, on the many ways that St. Louis has been overlooked as an important blues town, are worth looking at. Some posts are on jazz musicians such as Clark Terry.

I actually interviewed the author back in 2010. You can listen here:

I encountered the book in this video. I wanted a copy but got scared away by the price (starting at 300 dollars currently).

Yeah, I missed the chance to pick it up when it was published. I thought that one of the local libraries would get it and I'd eyeball it first, but they never did. Then I forgot about it and when I thought to look again it was out of print and the prices for used copies were unforgiving, to say the least.
