American Epic Charlie Musselwhite
« on: June 30, 2017, 08:28:44 AM »
At the end of episode 1 Charlie Musselwhite plays a guitar tune.  I think it was Mississippi River Blues but not sure.  Can anyone verify?  Is the recording, or an original available online?

I mistakenly deleted it from my DVR

Thanks.

I don't know--I don't have the video, but you could always try asking Charlie through his website:

http://www.charliemusselwhite.com/

I can't remember the song from American Epic, but I found this on YouTube:

Perhaps someone who has access to the video will know.

Thanks for the link Stuart.  That's a cool song too but that's not what is on American Epic.  The search continues.

Charlie announces the song as: I'll Get a Break Someday, by Will Shade, or learned from Will.

Sounds very Hooker-ish to me.

Here's Charlie playing it at the Will Shade tribute concert, with Joe Filisko on harmonica

The earliest version I know is Tampa Red's I'll Get a Break Some Day, recorded  on October 27, 1934 (it's on YouTube). Casey Bill Weldon made it on March 27, 1937 (also on YouTube; two takes from Document CD). Will Shade recorded it for George Mitchell in 1962 or '63; issued on Revival and Rounder (and also on guess-where). My money's on Tampa as the writer.
