The minstrel and annex bands were features at the show grounds. Here were a group of colored minstrels, players, band people, under the direction of Edward Rucker... The band plays pretty airs of all kinds, suiting the music nicely to the work in hand. When the snakes were exhibited it played a charming waltz; somehow it fitted the exhibit; others were of similar propriety - The Indianapolis Freeman, July 4th, 1914, quoted in Ragged But Right by Lynn Abbott and Doug Seroff

Mama sure don't allow!
« on: February 03, 2008, 02:34:26 AM »
Don't know if this fits the forum. But...

As a big fan of ('70s artist) JJ Cale, I always liked the "Mama don't" song, or... his version of it. And as a kid I had an LP with a Washboard Sam recording of it, from the 30s. But never really heard the many versions that exist, although a dixieland jazz fake book I have has it as "New Orleans traditional, recorded by George Lewis, Punch Miller, etc...".

Until today that is...

Here's a list of some of the old versions of the song (I found on google):

Thanks for the addition... but I still haven't heard that one... but I have heard all the above, as that was what the list was, it was the play list to the MP3.  :)

I've probably got a few post war recordings of the song if you want to go down that road. One that comes to mind is Bo Diddley's then topical recording "Mama Don't Allow No Twisting In Here".  ;D

Well BH isn't that just typical that you have the only twisting version, wow what a find  :o

What d'you say if next year we do that Xmas card thing we mentioned earlier, you know with the fifth RJ photo on the front and we fix it to play that Do Biddley twister when it opens up  :P

It's on a 1963 Pye International LP titled "Bo Diddley" (original huh?) - straight reissue of US 1962 Checker release. But I'm veering into territory non CB...

hello friend,
you can add to the list cow cow davenport's "mama don't allow no easy riders here." & though it's really a take on the song "take me back", (the 1st verse or two is in the mama don't allow theme) william harris' "hot time blues" may be worth a listen to you, also. (it's a cool performance, anyway! - so you should)
